I actually heard about this 4 or 5 days ago in the news, but there has been no discussion.

This has popped up in threads here every so often. Although I would like to see it happen, I think this is just another El Dorado.

A Spitfire costs around 7 million plus restore a semi-decent post war one, plus the costs of running it and sourcing spare Merlins etc. Restoration generally means a total rebuild though, a rebuilt Spitfire (or Hurricane/P-51/Bf-109) generally has only a few original components fitted into a new structure. So regardless of what state they're in, if someone has enough cash then they could get one of those airworthy after it's dug out of the ground. But very little of the original will be useable.

I'd like to see them dug up and flying, but I'd rather see a Mosquito flying TBH.

Or a Halifax/Stirling/Wellington/Typhoon/Lysander*/Blenheim/Beaufighter/Beaufort.

*I believe the Indian Air Force Historic Flight may be looking at getting one of these sorted.

Someone in the US maybe NZ is rebuilding a Beaufighter & recently a french company IIRC built a 75% Mossie & it's flying. Soon there will be a P61 flying as well as someone in the US is working on one. Depending on how many are found if at all will depend on how many get rebuilt w/ most of the find being parts for currently flying ones. If they hadn't smelted all those at Davis Monthan AFB or rolled them into the sea after the war plenty of spares/rare a/c would now being available. How many rookie cards did we destroy in the spokes of our bikes as kids???
