Northampton 1/44 Upgrade Question

Post by LoBaron »

I got a question for our naval history experts [:)]

While filing through tracker I noticed something weird on the 1/44 upgrade for CA Houston:

Change tower armor from 62 to 0? Does anybody know the historical reason for this? Were there modifications made to reduce top heavyness
or similar? Or other reasons like the new radar sets? Just wondering.

For those seeking enlightenment, first step would be to read this thread.[:)]

modifications made to reduce top heavyness

According to Friedman, that was the reason. New Orleans class should
lose the conning tower as well(page 339), but in babeslight scenario,
it is listed as 150 armor right to the end of the war. I think
Friscos's tower was removed during repairs in early 43'.

Almost every combat ship was adding so much AAA weaponry, that those reductions became urgent. Even then, some remained quite unstable.
