Exactly how do you read this?

The two numbers on either side of the center piece are in green and red.
I originally thought that was sort of the expected loss for the attacker (left side) and defender (right side). But more often than not, the actual point loss seems to be defender/attacker.

The manual does not seem to be clear on this.

Any clarification would be helpful.

I'll let the clever people answer this properly, but I just see it as Green (Good) - Red (Bad) and that's what I base my attack decisions on.

If it displays positive values, then higher = better (in line with all other stats, higher = better). So 2:0 is good for the attacker.

However if you check "displays casualties" in the options menu, it will dipslay the casualties as negative values. So 0:-2 is good for the attacker.

Also, like Warspite said green is always whats good for you. If it displays kills, the kills you'll inflict are marked green. If it displays casualties, the casualties the enemy will take are marked in green.

We provided both systems because Panzer Corps and the original Commander series displayed it in different ways. Choose whichever you prefer.
