I plan on running a game vs. the AI as Japan once my current game as the allies is done, and this AAR is pure education for my next WitP:AE undertaking. A great read sirs, thank you all!

Thanks for the comment. I really wish I could actually spend some time working regularly on the AAR.

Since moving up and taking over my store as Manager my work has been spotty at best on the Forum. Really want to get into a talk about RA and the economy to try to demonstrate the good and bad options within the Scenario. Don't know if that will happen but it might help some of the other players out there. I know Dan really keeps his rolling every day and I could only WISH for the independent businessman job that he possesses! It is planned for Paula and I to move in that direction but not for a while yet.

As most of you know Dan left for a hiking trip with his family for the last 4-5 days and should be back at it today. let us see....what have I done over those same days? Simple. Worked 40+ hours in 4 days with another to go. BIG SMILES!

Dan is back in action and we got in a pair of turns today. It appears that the Cochran Household will all go to bed early tonight except the PATRON of the home so this means--with no turn to do--I can actually do a Post.

There have been positive developments in China and we have ordered what is HOPED FOR to be the FINAL assault on Singapore...

Getting ready for dinner and thought I would Post a screenshot of Dan's defensive line in China. The Railroad Line has FINALLY been pierced breaking his ability to rapidly shift troops anywhere along the Front.

Main Thrusts:
1. Nanning just fell on 3-23 and there are 3 TK Reg and 3 Inf Divisions Operating here.

2. The river crossing breaking the line has an Inf Div in place with two more crossing within 3-5 days.

3. The ground between the two attacks has three more IDs working to force their way through the line as well.

4. Dan has taken the bate in my China Deployment where I left just single Brigades and Artillery squarely in front of the two hexes east of Changsha. He has attacked SE of Changsha and driven my Brigade from the hex. WANT him to do the same due east of Changsha. Hopefully--he will think I am weak and advance. If he does he will find all cities nearby with good Forts and plenty of Assault Value to hold.

While he is doing that I continue to add more troops to those at Changsha. Currently 2 ID and 2 Engineer units is at this base. Two more ID and several Artillery units are moving in as well. If possible, I WANT Changsha and cutoff those troops to the east.

This dispersion of effort is somewhat necessary due to the Stacking Limits. I follow them pretty closely and HOPE this will work.

When you do pics of ground theaters can you show hexside control? It makes it a lot easier to tell what is happening.
Also Chinese troops in the open near Nanyang! Go get em!

Saros: Here is the requested shot.

If you look at both screenshots you will see that Canton has 145 Planes (added 27 Sally at end of turn) and Hankow is stocked with 196. Add a further 112 up at Ichang and one can see the amount of bombing power I have moved into China. I've been working Changsha and the three nearby bases over with this airpower for several weeks now. Am trying to wipeout supply as well as keep the Forts from rising. Kweilin and Liuchow have also been getting hit regularly. Many of those bombers are going over to ground attack in an effort to raise disruption in targeted hexes.

PLANS:
With some work his right flank is in deep kimchi. Am going to try to move west from my river crossing and drive out the solitary Chinese units holding those hexes and move on Kweilin.

He has booted my TK Reg out of Liuchow and advanced AWAY from the town. This has been encouraged as I have a pair of IDs moving into the SW of the town across from the river. They will drive across the river and inflict serious casualties as well as pin down those troops from helping the soldiers at Kweilin. Nanning fell to a single ID in a 9-1 assault on the 22nd.

In the Center, I need hexside control and so the ID in the SW hex next to Changsha will advance into the Changsha and then advance out to the SE. There are 4 Chinese units due east of Changsha and 3 SE of CHangsha. I WANT THEM if possible...

The north is stabile for the moment.

CarDiv5 has stayed in the southern area near Melbourne for a few days and is now high-tailing it to join-up with its sisters. Don't like keeping them in an unsupported area of operations at this point so they got their sailing orders to MOVE OUT and head for western Aussieland. They have plenty of fuel and can scoot right along.

To the SW are part of my AOs support TF. I NEED the 35,000+ fuel carried in those AOs so I order them to FULL Speed for the next two days so they can head for a rendezvous and completely refuel the entire KB.

A large portion of the Fleet sits at Carnavon waiting for fuel. This primitive Port has Hiryu, Soryu, Zuiho, Ryujo, Junyo, Hosho, and Taiyo all sitting there waiting for 3 large AOs to enter and refuel. They have emptied 3 large AKE so all their sorties and Torps are back in good order. Fuel tomorrow and they can sail to join their sisters coming up from the south.

Here sits CarDiv1 in hot pursuit of enemy combatants. The warships were spotted just this round and should be under attack tomorrow. Both CVs have ALL their Torps in stock so this could be VERY GOOD!

Could simply say IBID. for Burma as well. I would still be at Moulmein if Dan hadn't FLED Burma. Currently there are 3 TK Reg, 2 Brigades, and 1 Inf Reg in Theatre. We want Katha and will then wait for reinforcements before driving on Myitkyina.

SUMMARY
It is March 23, 1942 and I HOPE to have Singapore tomorrow. Still fighting to take Clark and Bataan. Java is down to two bases and that campaign will be finished within 3-5 days.

All OIL Centers taken with little to no damage!

Despite this HORRIBLE ground performance, I have nearly ALL of NW and Western Australia as well as the vast majority of Burma. NUTS! The enemy has moved into the Eastern Aleutians, however, I have firm control of Umnak and everything east.

PLANNING
1. As soon as Singers Falls the three strong Inf Div will immediately shift to planning for a Pt Blair Landing. This base was reinforced early and has been under aerial attack everyday as well as BB Bombardments roughly twice a week. The defense is centered around 2 Indian Brigades and 4 Support units. WANT those 15-20,000 troops. They are freebies like the ones I got at Cocos where I severely mauled the 18th Brit ID.

2. When Java is done I shall pick-up the 2nd and 56th IDs plus two Brigades and deposit them at Busselton and Esperance (south of Perth). A Para SNLF Assault unit is already at Pt. Hedlund and will drop on Kalgoorlie to cutoff reinforcements and retreat.

3. The 6th and 14th ID sit at Rabaul. Had planned to land them at Bowen and still might. If not, then New Caledonia might be an option. Lean towards Eastern Australia to draw Allied units north and away from the Perth Area.

4. Just bought out a battered Chinese Theatre ID and it restores itself, along with a Brigade, with plans of taking the two American bases at Cold Bay and Akutan in Aleutians. Don't care about the territory but DO CARE about the Marine Regiment and Ind Army Regiments placed at the bases.

5. KB to reform and refuel at Carnavon and then move south for another run at Melbourne--Sydney. This time I shall bring 6 CV, 5 CVL, and 2 CVE.

American CVs have not been seen for nearly a month. I would place a bet on them being at New Zealand currently. After the Aleutian adventure he has had plenty of time to steam there. This is why I pulled CarDiv5 back towards the Fleet. I've been counting the days and decided that I ad overstayed my welcome by about 3-4 days. Back to what I was saying, NZ makes sense because he could move North if I lunged at Noumea or Suva OR he could move up to defend eastern or southern Aussliand. Could be terribly wrong but we'll see if anything happens.

This is the state of things and I am GLAD to finally get in a fairly complete update on our game.

Sorry. Thinking she was 25 knots. Brain malfunction.

Looks like the raid has been a success.

Is this worth the fuel it costs after the first round cleared the decks down there? What's the goal?

Thanks for the commentary and question. I think moving back down there is good for another round. Once my 5 AOs arrive then I can refuel fully and then that will be it. Once fuel is short the Kaigun will move back to Soerabaja--Singapore for some R&R. Don't need AOs to operate around there.

He has to have kept a bunch of shipping in NZ and elsewhere. Reinforcement Convoys are out there so I will do another thrust that direction. Have to also add that is should serve to Cover my landings at Busselton and Esperance--Albany.

Singapore FINALLY surrenders and 50,000 troops in 37 Units walk to their POW Camps. The 5th and 33rd ID immediately shift to prepping for Port Blair. They are at about 90% strength, the 18th ID is about 70% and the Imperial Guards are CRUSHED at about 30%.

Rest the 300 planes that were hitting the base. They will move towards Australia, Pt Blair, and Burma. A reaction Force will be created and sent to Rabaul.

CarDiv1 SCORES as it finally puts the END to Prince of Wales! The BB is pasted by 8 Bombs and 4 TTs and is VISUALLY seen sinking. Additionally, CL Glasgow takes 3 B and should be sunk tomorrow. CL Dragon takes a Torp and a B and may have sunk. Would have done FAR more had weather not closed the Flight Decks for the afternoon.

After tomorrow's attacks, CarDiv1 retires to Carnavon. Not too bad there...

Glad to see Singa finally fell. Now you're on the move again.  What would you do now that the amph bonus is expiring? Would you wait for your divs to be 100% prepped for Port Blair, thus losing 3 more months, or would you attack immediately and face the distruption caused by a non-prepped landing?

I fell like such a LOSER when it comes to Singapore. The initial two attacks collapsed due to some horrific die rolls. What a mess.

Port Blair? Yaaaa....well...

Don't have enough time to get before the bonus goes away so I think I shall move Southern Army to the tip of Sumatra and Prep there. 25th Army some support units, and the two Inf Div will land as soon as I can get there. I am thinking of a landing date around March 12-15th. When I shifted 5th and 33rd ID to Blair they started at 25% Prep. That helps some...

March 24th

CarDiv1 finishes its raiding by PASTING CL's Glasgow and Dragon. Dragon goes down under 10 bombs and Glasgow implodes with 19 hits. NICE!

Over in the Solomons a convoy is attacked by an American CA, CL, and 2 DDs. There are nearly 40 ships here with just a DD and 12 PB to protect them. Luckily the DD (Yayoi) is plucky and smacks the two escorting DDs around forcing an early retreat with what should have been a bloodbath. Final Japanese losses are the DD, 7 PB, 2 AK, and 3 AKL. Could have been much worse. Adding reinforcement to any convoy moving from this point on...

March 20, 1942

The carriers continue to wreak havoc and destruction upon all sorts of ships within the Allied Fleet. While I have not seen a lot of actual ships SINKING the numbers that are damaged is quite large.

These are the losses (I believe) so far:

Warships:
CA Exeter
CL Tromp, Danae
Destroyers: Walke, Electra, Express, Witte De With, Whipple

Merchant--Aux Ships
AK 12
AKL 14
AP 1
TK 4
AO 7
AS 1
AG 1
DMS 2
CM 3
PC 2
AM 6
AMc 3

Damaged Warships with number of Bomb and TT Hits:
BB Prince of Wales 8 B--3 TT
CA New Orleans 8 B (Sunk???)
CL Perth 2 B, Trenton 2 B, Glasgow 1 B, De Ruyter 6 B (Sunk???), Mauritius 2 B
DD Five have taken at least a bomb.

CarDiv2 just refueled from AOs and now can go after the warships around Prince of Wales. CarDiv5 refueled SW of Tazmania and is doing a Sweep along the SW Coast of Aussieland, CarDiv1 will refuel partially from the AOs that took care of CarDiv2, and KB-2 retires towards cardnavon with next to no sorties left. Three AKEs are there waiting and a group of 5 Tankers with 35,000 Fuel will be there in just a couple of days.

That about covers it for the moment...

To this total of ships one can add:

BB Prince of Wales
CL's Dragon and Glascow
AK 4

This major raid is now done. Time to reorganize, refuel, and prepare for the next attack...

It is REALLY funny you mention that. (well...not really FUNNY!) Last turn (3-26) a group of Hudson and B-26 attacked shipping at Carnavon. SCARED the tar out of me! Reformed Fleet and it is moving to Port Hedlund for fuel. I was taking notes, saw the attack play out, and my brain went into total overdrive! Movement orders issues ASAP...

We had a quick 3/26 turn with little excitement. See troops now moving west from Changsha and the other cities there. Think Dan is now taking his right flank threat quite seriously. Am hoping to pierce it in another location next turn.

Am waiting for our last turn of the day and will Post some screenshots at that point.

Need to get my turn with Viperpol done so he gets his as well.

China continues to be a rather exciting location right now.

1. Dan's Right Flank is now fully embroiled in the Japanese attack. The last ID crossed over into hex 78,53 (the clear hex west of Changsha on the RR) but bad weather prevents 200+ bombers from smashing to two Chinese units present there. This will happen now. I shall rest the ID and smack those Chinese out tomorrow (with 2 days of bombing). Chinese move into Nanning and my reinforcing ID is about to cross the river SE of there and smack the Chinese Corps blocking that area.

2. He moves those P-40s (64 of them) back into Changsha and my two Zero SWEEPS decide to fly in AFTER the bombing missions. Not too much harm occurs as I lose 7 bombers and 3 Oscars before the Zeros and Tojos CRUSH the P-40s. Wanted to do some attriting of his fighters and this place is as good as any I guess.

3. A 3rd ID enters the Changsha hex. Order a deliberate attack. Last time dropped Forts by 1. We'll see what happens. I keep funneling troops into Changsha by the forrest NE of the city. Another ID and 2 Artillery units are headed there right now. This is the big we'll see of the campaign. He has pulled several Infantry units from the base to move towards the Right Flank threat opening--PERHAPS--an opportunity here.

The Fleet is now looking to be concentrated at Pt Hedlund within 3-4 days. CarDiv5 passes SW of Perth and the AOs are right behind them.

Three big, fat TK arrive at Pt Hedlund to provide some fuel immediately for DDs and CLs.

Carnavon goes to AF-3 this day. I move in three full Daitai of Betty--Nell. Order them to Port Attack Perth to hit any shipping present there. Have 18 Zero fly a Sweep ahead of them with 27 Zeros flying Escort.

Dan and I only got one in today due to an aquarium crisis at my house. I have several large tanks and my 125 Gallon filter's stopped causing a bad moment for a bunch of fish. ANYWAY...issue solved but it meant we only got in the single turn.

Biggest news was my attack on Perth managed--AGAIN--to reverse the order of attacks. My escorted Betty--Nell Daitai ran into 50+ P-40s with limited pilot experience and got mauled. AFTER this my Zeros flew their Sweeps and pasted some of these fighters. This is the 3-4 time this has happened to me where the Sweep comes in AFTER the strikes. Any helpful hints on how to prevent and/or lesson this from occurring?

Probably just sweep for a day, make sure you know what you're facing, then see whether it is possible to hit the base.

If you want to try to get bombers there in the afternoon phase, use naval strike with port as secondary, but then you risk hitting some xAKL and having the same result. Best to sweep for a few days before, I'd say. Those pilots are too important.

Make sure your bombers are B-17s and/or B-24s. I just had that happen to me. My small group of P-38s went in first and then the 4e bombers. Finally, a massive sweep of P-38s came in last. And yes, the P-38s were all from the same base and all closer to the target that the bombers. Thankfully, those B-17/24s are tough!

March 31st

China is drawing Dan into an Attritional Air War. He has that P-40 Wing present and has now added 3 Squadrons of Hurricanes. Additionally there is a Squadron of B-26 and B-25 present. I WELCOME this development! Am re-tooling 3 Daitai of Zeros to move in and SMASH them. He lost about 20-25 P-40s a few days ago over Changsha and last turn saw over 20 Hurricanes drop. My M3s are now in full production so the Daitai fighting in China will upgrade to these models with slightly better stats and more limited range.

He is bombarding my units in China in at least 4-5 locations as well as launching Deliberate Attacks trying to gain some traction somewhere as my Offensive---apparently--has him highly concerned on his Right Flank.

The Bombardments as well as Air War MUST be draining his supply. Lord knows that China doesn't have much to start with. Any ideas on how to exploit that?

I've got recon flying to find where he is keeping his airpower when it is not in Changsha so it is now a game of hide-n-seek. Lord knows he doesn't have supply enough to replace lost airframes IN CHINA so he must be rotating these unit back into India, draw planes, and then return. Does that sound plausible?

As to Changsha, I launched an attack by 3 ID and 2 Engineer units three days ago that got 1-2 and dropped Forts to 2. Surprisingly I hit again on the 31st and dropped the Forts to ONE! The result was 1-7 but casualties were minimal. He must be highly worried over these developments! I want him FIXED in Changsha. Two Artillery units, another Engineer, and the 59th ID is heading for the base to add weight to the next attacks.

My bombers have been hitting the Right Flank but I shall shift them back to Changsha in a turn or two after the Zeros make sure there isn't anything major to fight in the air...
