Worked from 7am--9pm today. Nothing done with the game. Tired enough to really be STUPID so I shall sleep and tackle a turn early in the morning.

Happy 4th!

Happy 4th. We shall patiently await our fireworks whenever they shall occur (no need to create a suboptimal timetable on our account).

Combat Report
November 22-24, 1942

Things continue to stabilize in Sumatra--Malaya. The first Japanese counter-punches are now launched and we'll have to see how they go.

Dan has moved about 10,000+ SS into the Strait of Malacca. I've moved large groups of aircraft as well as 2-3 ASW TF to pound on them in the shallow water.

REINFORCEMENTS/MOVEMENT:
1. Let us roll the die gang. The 14th ID and an Air Division load onto 60 AK--AP to go to Tand??? Last turn a pair of CAs and 5 DDs moved there to prevent any rudeness by Dan. They did not encounter anything. Tonight they will be joined by Yamato and Musashi with 6 DD. The two TF will combine and guard the reinforcement TF. These troops MUST get there. There are 60+ Tojo present to cover things as well as 75 Val.

2. After watching Georgetown get pasted day after day I finally GROW A BRAIN and move everything to Taiping. It is Sz-3 and cannot be bombarded. DUH! An Air Flotilla is headed there to reinforce the IJA Base Force and large IJN Base Force present there. Move 100 Fighters and 48 Vals there.

3. Landed 60% of an SNLF Assault Brigade at Batoe-Eil and Dan has not attacked with what little he has present so we shall BLAST the troops there tomorrow. BB Fuso will hit it as well as three Sentai of Bombers.

4. Have a pair of THAI units at Singora. BB's Nagato and Hyuga will hit the base tonight as well as three Sentai of bombers. Will attack bombard and then attack on the 25th and see what we're dealing with (Marine Paras and elements of an American Rgt)

5. Fast TF carrying 1000 troops from the 4th ID shall hit Phuket tomorrow. There is not much there. Order a bomber group to hit it and CAP the FTF. They have about 75 AV with them and it SHOULD be enough...

6. 2nd ID unloading at Batavia and will then combat load to land at Sibolga.

Naval Action:
1. BB Revenge is caught in the middle of the Strait and gets pummeled by nearly 100 Vals during the turn. She takes over 12 bomb hits and is left burning. DD Crosby is sunk from the same TF. WHAT I wouldn't have given for some TTs! Still an SS might get her yet.

2. Wrote about the DD Action at Tand a few days ago. It was nice to see a pair of Brit DDs go down as well as two DMS.

3. An SS takes a shot at BC Kirishima about 3 hexes from Oosthaven. Pretty much tells Dan KB is here...

4. CVEs refuel two hexes from Cocos. KB will arrive at Cocos tomorrow and then begin its move.

5. From the Fuso group detach 1 CL and 4 DDs to move directly into his supply line west of Sabang. Could be a surprise and draw out his CVs!

SS
11-22 I-27 sinks AK Makawao near Great Nicobar
11-23 I-22 MISSES BB South Dakota! CRAP!! Would have been nice to see...
11-23 I-32 sinks CM Kung Wo near Great Nicobar
11-23 I-18 sinks AK Mendoza near Sabang
11-24 I-Boats shot and MISS four times!

You're using the minisub carriers (I-18, 20, 22, 24, 26 from memory) on the front line? There are only 5 of them and I would much rather they be carrying minisubs into and out of the combat zones.

Combat Report
November 25, 1942

A solid and good round in all respects this day.

BURMA
Dan's Death Star of troops 42nd U ID, 2 Aussie ID, and several TK Bn are moving SW towards Prome. He is going to cut-off the troops near Ramree. Not much I can do here. Prome has AV 500 with Ft-4. Troops have taken position along the east bank of the Irrawaddy and are digging in. I predict he shall try to cut SW from the last clear hex to the jungle cutting the road to Prome. An Inf Regiment and two TK Reg will be there (hopefully) to greet him and the TK he leads with.

Up north at 60,44 (above Mandalay) the 12th ID is about to crush a pair of Indian Brigades and six other small units. Once it does that the ID shall move to Prome and bolster defenses.

SUMATRA-MALAYA
Batoe-Eil is the first target to get retaken from the Imperialist swine. It gets smacked by BB Fuso and then nailed by three different Sentai of Helen/Sally. The SNLF Assault Brigade (at 50% strength) goes in and scores 13-1! Scratch some Seabees and Infantry. First step and ONE DOWN. The SNLF unit immediately begins prep for Siberoet. It will join-up with its other half and land there in 3-4 days.

Begin bombing Siberoet, Nias, and Sinabang.

BB's Yamato and Musashi link-up with the pair of CA and DDs at Tand???. In a remembrance of Akyab, I do note that moonlight is GREAT! The Convoy carrying 10th ID and an Air Flotilla get 3/4 of the way to their target. They gain the embedded escort of 3 CA and 2 DD. Need 1-2 days for unloading.

My blocking force just north of Medan gets kicked out and Dan makes small mistake in having the Tanks there follow in pursuit. They will be crushed by 4th ID tomorrow. 4th ID has 210 AV present with an Army HQ, and 3 Engineering units. Forts should move to 3 before the Allied Attack force arrives. They are led by 1st Marines and 27th US ID. There AV is terrible in they only managed about 200 total to drive out the Imperial Guards Blocking Force.

Once the TF finishes unloading at Tand??? my heavies shall provide a taste of Dan's medicine my making a Bombardment on this stack. Have almost got enough Base Force support in the area to begin a serious bombing campaign on troops moving along the roads and in bases.

Phuket will be landed upon tomorrow.

While doing that a Convoy carrying the balance of the 48th ID is sneaking along the coast. If possible I shall bring it down the coast and counter-land at Alor Star. Doubt if Dan would EVER expect that.

Singora will be attacked tmorrow by my pair of BBs, 3 Sentai of Tojo, and then two Brigades of THAI troops will assault the position. SHOULD work!

2nd ID is loaded and now moving up the coast near Oosthaven to counter-land at Sibolga. He is moving his units from there towards Tand???. Want to cutoff his supply and MOVE on the rear of his attack column.

Port Blair gets the unkind attention of 56 B-17 and B-24. They are met by 30 Tojo. The AF takes some damage and 9 planes are destroyed on the ground by INTEL shows serious losses to the Allied 4EB. When they come back tomorrow they shall meet 50+ Tojo and 30 Zero.

NOTE: Two sets of CV TF are spotted about 8-10 hexes from Diego Garcia. Without even looking I KNOW this is his major staging base. Dan LOVES that island! 4 CVs are spotted and a separate TF with a pair of CVEs are seen to...

The Kido Butai DEPARTS Cocos. It is fully fueled and shall join up with the CVEs who have already moved north for two days. The Game BEGINS readers...

Forgot to mention within my Posting that I will land with Paras at the island above Trinkat tomorrow. The Day after will see Trinkat fall.

We're working on a rolling set of landings and punches in an ATTEMPT to get him REACTING for a change.

Good observation. I recall in FatR's game against Yubari/BigRed these turned out to be critical if ignored and built up. A really good thing so many exterior bases in this area where not built up!

I think John is really turning this situation around! The swift reaction of the IJN and the quick assembly of so many counterlanding forces is probably a good surprise to Dan. Without those preparations, allowing him perhaps some 1-2 months time before countering, he could have easily rested his worn out units, and built up various bases. Now it looks like his lack of prepping propperly makes him pay a price...?

Waiting for great news from KB...

Target Acquired at a distance of 32 hexes from KB:

RAID: 121 F4F, 71 SBD, and 30 Avengers. They target CL Tatsuta and 4 old DDs. NOTHING (lots of bombs and TTs used up though) is sunk although Tatsuta takes 3 Bombs and is gonna sink. One bomb on each of two DDs who should be able to get home. The other two FLEE!

The deep breath before the storm has occurred. The Japanese are finally ready to contest the seas between Sumatra and Malaya. The 10th ID reaches Tand safely and fully unloads without issue. Additionally a pair of CD units and an Air Flotilla deploy. Definitely looking better for the moment. Time to unleash the hounds:

Air Bases:
Tand Sz-3 AF 63 Zero and 90 Kate set to range 7 (one hex short of Sabang).
Taiping Sz-3 AF 48 Tojo, 27 Zero, and 81 Vals set to the same area.

If ANYTHING is below Sabang next round it shall be blasted.

Ground:
The 2nd ID is three days from landing at Sibolga.

The 14th ID is unloading at Singapore tomorrow and then reloading into a BUNCH of AK--AP to shuttle up to Tand???.

The 48th ID TF is not spotted approaching Alor Star. Still needs two days to get there.

Phuket holds just barely in a 1-1 result with the Japanese attacking.

All Allied units (including two partial Marine Rgts) surrender at Padang.

Take Burma hex 60,44 in a 19-1 attack wrecking two British/Indian Brigades and five other units. They retreat into the jungle. The 12th ID, who scored this small victory, prepares to move to Prome.

Paras land at Trinkat and just miss a 2-1 on their first attack. More will arrive tomorrow.

Naval:
KB moves steadily up. Allied CVs disappear after the previous day's appearance but we KNOW they are around. SETTINGS: Zeros (M2 and M5) at 60% split between 7,000 (the CVLs Zeros) and 17,000 (heavy CVs) Ft, Vals and Kates set at 10,000 Ft. There are right at 800 planes on the KB presently.

Three CAs bombard Langsa doing moderate damage to the facility as well as over 300 casualties.

BBs Yamtao and Musashi will bombard the troops beginning to invest medan tomorrow.

Take a look at the Strait of Malacca:

Did mouse-over of the major Burma--Sumatra--Malaya Allied Units and got the following count:

Akyab: 19
Ramree: 21
Burma Interior: 23
Sabang: 23
Langsa: 17
Medan: 7
Sibolga: 13
Alor Star: 3

Do the math. We're talking over 125 units here! HOLY CATS! How is this possible? Makes me want to drink heavily...

10,000 feet for the Vals? Isn't that too low for them to dive bomb? I thought 11,000 was the minimum altitude for dive bombing...

10k is fine for dive-bombing. I often use this setting. I've heard it's more accurate the lower you set them in the 10-15k range, but I've not tested so I don't know for sure.

Any thoughts on those unit counts. CRAZY!

I figure my CAP is divided with about 2/3 set to 17,000 and 1/3 at 7,000. Should work for those dratted TT Squadrons.

Am headed to work but figure I'll be back for a late morning turn since I ams imply training a new Opener for the store.

Agreed. 10K definitely works for dive bombers. I think it is the default altitude pick for the AI.

Some of the divisions may be broken down..and then there is the possibility of armour, arty and support units that may be moving with them.

There are many, many brown people in the co-prosperity sphere that will have reservations about the whole idea. The Imperial Marketing Dept should probably step up their efforts. Maybe some cute anime characters or something?

His Avengers are the least of your problems. Each CV only carries 15 and they still have a 50% dud rate. Keep your CAP at the same alt as your bombers imo.

His Avengers are the least of your problems. Each CV only carries 15 and they still have a 50% dud rate. Keep your CAP at the same alt as your bombers imo.

So I read your suggestion to place the CVL's Zeros at 10,000 Ft for CAP as well as direct escort for the bomber force. Is that correct?

100% agree. The TBF's are more vulnerable to flak and there is the dud problem still. It's the SBD's that almost always strike the first blows against undamaged IJN ships. In the afternoon attack (if there is one), the TBF's have better luck against the cripples.

Here is a tough tactical problem for the readership.

BURMA:
Dan is sliding his two Aussie IDs and the American 41st ID along the open terrain working to cutoff my troops off Ramree. His lead unit is the 254th TK Reg. It is beat-up and heading for the road/jungle hex SE of Ramree. I have combat power here but have had to reduce it by pulling the 4th and 48th out for operations to the south.

Would like some serious suggestions. Here is the specific layout of forces:

Shwebo: 12th ID at Full Strength plus a full strength THAI ID.

Magwe: 2nd Armored is near full strength (400 AV)

Next hex on the Irrawaddy has the 33rd ID at about 85%.

In the jungle hex next down is the full strength 21st Mixed Brigade

Prome: 21st ID (75%), TK Reg, and an Inf Reg

East of Ramree is the Full Strength 18th ID

SE of Ramree next to Prome is a TK Reg and an Inf Reg

Rangoon: TK Reg and 59th ID (60% Strength)

All bases have at least Sz-4 or -5 Forts and everyone else is digging in.

THINKING:
I potentially have the 2nd Armored, 12th, and 33rd as a maneuver force. I could cross the Irrawaddy and counterattack heading south trying to clear the west bank.

OR

MOVE the above forces and hold the northern/central area of Burma with a minimum and concentrate at Prome.

OR

???

Really open to any form of idea here.

I have a long-term plan if we can drive the Americans out of Sumatra but that is a long way away...
