Probably the former.

I'm playing a BigBabesC PBEM. It's late Feb 42 and I just ran into some P38s flying CAP over Darwin. Needless to say, I was quite surprised to see them as they are listed as being as only being available as of May of 42. (They somehow showed up 2+ months early.)

My opponent is playing another BigBabesC game and that game has progressed into October 42. I was wondering if the two files could somehow have been partially merged. Is this possible? I'm no computer geek, but I'm leaning toward it not being in the realm of possibility. Therefore, I'm suspecting that I am missing something with respect to availability dates of aircraft. As the Japanese player, I can accelerate appearance dates, but I always thought the allied player could not move things up. Am I mistaken?

There are some units that start with P-38Es. They are all permanently restricted to the USA, but the aircraft can be
"upgraded" to P-40Es and the P-38Es go to the pool. It is a bit expensive in airframes to do, but it can be useful.

Thanks. I just checked out the squadrons you're talking about. The good news is, he's limited to about 40 of the buggers through May. The Zeros I had escorting did just fine and dished out more than they took anyway, so I guess it's not that big of a deal. I was just kind of curious as to how he did it.

Thanks again, I'll be able to sleep now.

there are some few groups of 'pre-production' planes that show up in my DBB_B game, not just fighters but hvy transports & patrol planes. they're usually a coupla' planes short of complete, but often front up in pairs, so by down-grading one, i'll have planes to fill out t'other, w/ enough replacements to hopefully last until the production comes on line.

Why is expensive? Some of the old airframes are lost in the process of upgrading?
I've always thought that they all went back to the pool even if with some delay ...
Thanks

Not all of the units will return the aircraft back to the pool. I believe that most or all of the units that start with P-38Es do not. So you are trading 25 P40-Es for 20 P-38Es, 25 P40-Es for 10 P38-Es, etc. Those P40-Es will be lost.

You can try to upgrade old planes in active untis with P40Es first, and use the old planes to upgrade the P-38 units. But in early '42 fighters are in scare supply for the allies and you need a full 25 plane load for every restricted unit, no matter how many P38s are in it.
