I've been carsick, airsick and seasick but I never thought I'd die from it. I was born in W Va and I couldn't take those mountain roads. They had to stop the car every so often so I could get out and heave.

What about those sixteen guys killed in boot camp? Was that normal?

I've been motion sick enough that I thought I was going to die, but of course, I wasn't sick enough to do so. It's a good thing the world has Dramamine now. I probably would expire on a long ocean voyage too. What a terrible way to go.

I have about 3,000 days at sea, and the first day out was always the worst for me. After that I was fine. Except during a storm.

I went through a stage where for the better part of a year I was sick on every single flight. I was only kept on flight status due to a simpathetic CO and a helpful flight surgeon who ruled that , "as long as he can do his job , he can continue to fly". But it was a very long , miserable year. I've got total sympathy for those who suffer motion sickness.

I wonder if he died from dehydration. Can't think of any other reason it would kill him.

Maybe not connected he timing of Mahin's death but here is some info on the contribution of flu and other respiratory illnesses to mortality in the Navy during WW1: http://www.naval-history.net/WW1NavyUS-Casualties.htm. "Note that even before the 1918 influenza pandemic and the respiratory disease deaths it often led to, many men died from those same non-influenza-linked, respiratory diseases that were common in those days, such as pneumonia." Perhaps in his weakened state he was more susceptible to a secondary infection.

I have to give some credence to that being a St. Louisan. Back in the day, before Mayor Tucker, we were using Illinois coal instead of Arkansas coal. The Arkansas coal was much much cleaner. Anyways, there was one day back in the thirties I think, where a St. Louisan would have inhaled five tablespoonsful of soot. Oh, those were the good old days.

His age at death (which is somewhat obscured by a wrinkle) was 101.

The other obscuration reads: A Norwegian caretaker, a civil-
ian, was the only person in the
room [etc.]
