I've never seen a large unit with that much experience before, Allied or Japanese

Nice. The 5th ID are a bunch of snake eaters, to be sure.

I actually love the 5th. In my current game both the 5th and the 2nd IJA Divisions are over 95 EXP. Yikes.

In 42 and 43 experience and morale like that are king. But by 44 and 45 it is devices and firepower that matter. Your average Indian 44 division will match up well with this one up in open terrain and a USMC division would have it for lunch. Actually, it is pretty good reflecton of the reality of ground combat in the Pacific theater. The game designers got it pretty good here.

It's true, and accurately forces Japan onto the defensive as the game goes on. The IJA theory of morale and bayonet charges was no match for Allied firepower in the end.

So what is the best way to gain experience for LCUs (> 70 exp)? Fighting only way?

Yes, fighting only way (and some units start with high experience). Also not taking too many casualties.

Yes, fighting and winning that is. My best troops aside from the marines are Indian. They have been at is since 1941 and are looking pretty good as 45 rolls around.
