Situation: Big fat target and an undetected cruiser force, trained in night combat...

What is wrong with this picture?

The taskforce assigned to make a night attack towards Prt. Moresby and out of the way to Darwin during the day phase..

You are using a waypoint, did you set the TF to return via waypoints??

No, I didnt set it to return - it was set to retire (to Darwin).

I can say that the end result of this mistake was a few cruisers and a destroyer lost..

Along these lines, what are your 'threat' settings?

I assume that it intercepted the transport TF at sea several times, or 'reacted' at max =6 range, used up its movement and was then set upon in the am by KB?

Personally, I avoid max react settings in my SCTFs.

No reaction by the TF, although that could have been an issue. Usually if not set to patrol I don't have problems with reacting.

(ships didn't collide either)

I assume that your TF went 4 hexes in the night naval movement phase, and then in the day naval movement phase it went to Port Moseby. That is what I would have expected given the orders I see.

OK, you're teasing us now.

Show us the screenshot of your 'threat' and waypoints page.

Yep thats it, I realised after reviewing my orders today (after combat results) that it was wrong.. Thought I post it up here to give others a chance to prevent it..

Good news is that I tore the convoy a new one, bad news is my surface force got pommeled by LBA Rabaul and KB at 7 hexes range...

The waypoint screwed over even worse as Canberra got attacked by a submarine and took two torpedoes in that exact hex...

A little bit frustrating that you can't alter course of your taskforce though. I set the waypoint thinking that it would alter the course to "chase" the transport into Moresby.. Should have just guessed its course directly towards Moresby and added 3 hexes for a slow moving taskforce.

It might have not intercepted but I would at least have an intact force..

I would have set the destination and home port to be Darwin with about the same way point you had. Probably one hex outside of PM.
That would have let the SCTF retreat towards Darwin and it should have been out of range and still hit the transport TF.

Yikes, being pommeled sounds even worse than being pummeled.

I believe this is what he was referring to.
