I've read somewhere in the forum that you want a 2 to 3 million stockpile of HI points by 1943 when playing as Japan. Whatever the target stockpile, my question is how much do you need to expand HI to get there? In my current PBEM game I'm producing just under 15k per day, and increasing the stockpile by 5k to 7k per day depending on other production being on or off (date is late March 1942). Is this enough? Or do I need to expand HI to 15k or higher?

If I can add 5k per day for 270 days (to end of 42) I will amass 1.35 million HI in addition to the 373,000 I have now. But, as aircraft and engine production continue to expand, use of HI will increase and it seems unlikely that I'll be able to continue stockpiling 5k per day. How high does HI production need to go?

I can see it has to go higher, but how high? 18k? 20k?

Thanks in advance for any input or suggestions.

Totally based upon your play style.  Some players increase it not at all (or almost not all - MikeS).  Others increase it a bit (me).  Others will add +2000.  All depends upon you.

What matters?  Simple.  What are you target objectives?  If you plan to take India, SOV, and OZ then expanding HI by +2000 makes sense as you will have the resources to support that expansion.  If you plan only historical objectives, or nearly historical, then expanding too much will implode your economy.  You want to expand HI only by the amount of resource and fuel that you can supply to it.

Now why do some players only target historical and others the world?  That is where the individual player comes in.  How much can you take and hold?  How much is too much that overextends you and leads to an easy allied victory?

I try to expand it about 1K. You can't expand it more that oil, fuel, and resources can support. I expand in SRA and the Port Authur area. I never expand in the HI. It is too much to get fuel there.

Also, what scenario are you playing? When playing scenario 1 expanding might not help you at all. I actually shut down HI to save fuel in scenario 1 as I had plenty of supply and HI at that point and not enough fuel...

Thanks for all three replies.

It's scenario 1. And my first PBEM. Fuel has not been a problem, YET, although it's not always where I need it. I captured Palembang fairly early, so that helps. I've probably expanded HI about as far as I need to; my concern was that I haven't expanded it nearly enough; from these answers that appears to be not the case. I got a slow start getting routine resource convoys set up, but that's now under control.

Thanks again.

If you do expand it, do it slowly. I'm in my first pbem and tried to expand everything from HI to shipyards, after crashing the economy multiple times I find myself turning on and off whole sectors of industry.
