Found a bug when trying to optimize my various race starting ships:

If a race is given a ship size bonus in the races file:

'Ship Size Factor Civilian - resize factor for maximum civilian ship sizes
ShipSizeFactorCivilian ;1.2

'Ship Size Factor Military - resize factor for maximum military ship sizes
ShipSizeFactorMilitary ;1.2


The game will NOT load optimized designs that use this additional ship size. You can design them manually and they work, however if you attempt to save them and use them as optimized designs or attempt to load them from your save file, the game will NOT let you build them.

So it comes to the whole thing of: What's the point? I give this to some of the AI empires to make them stronger than others, but its pointless if the AI won't use it.

OK, seems its not so much a bug as it is a problem that as you increase tech levels, sometimes the in game designer decides it can do better (even though its designs are weaker). Skipping a tech level can certainly cause this to happen.

Wait? So what is the solution?

Don't skip techs, and it will build "oversized" ships?

What do you mean, "skipping a tech level"?

AFAIK, you can't skip over a level. To go from tech A to C, you have to research B. I haven't seen any case where that is not the case.

You misunderstand, these are optimized designs.

Its an odd thing. If you have a race that has a special tech...the Megatron Z4 shield for example, your optimized designs work fine at start tech level, and level 2 through 7. However, if you start at tech level 1, it will not load the start level optimized designs.

This seems to be tied directly to special techs, races without special techs load the optimized designs fine at tech level 1 games. And all tech level optimized designs load at game start, as you get the techs researched, they become available to build.

Basically if you don't use optimized designs, this will have no effect on you what so ever.

Many (all?) races do not have their racial tech's researched if they start on tech level one.  They need to research them.  I'm guessing that then the optimised designs might become available.
