As to why the Soviets still used them in 1945 - the Soviet industry failed to produce several items important to the war effort - items which were largely covered/substituted through Lend-Lease. They produced large numbers of light tanks on the one side (T-60 etc) which could not adequately engage other armor, and the next step up (by 1945) would be the T-34. They saw the need for a fast tank able to perform recon roles. This went so far that they asked for the Valentine-production to continue when Canadians were debating whether to shut down or not - the effect was that the Valentine stayed in production, and most Canadian-produced ones were shipped to the SU (ca. 1300 or so, only 20 were retained by the Canadian Armed Forces).

Nice find.

Indeed it is.

As has just been said the Soviets liked to use Valentines as recon vehicles at the end of WW2. IIRC the first Red Army tank to enter Berlin was a Valentine on a recce mission.

The retrieved vehicle is a Valentine IX. Here is a video of the recovery: Link.

Thanks for the explanation.
