Hello all,

Just wondering if any of you would like to give your opinions on which game is nearest to Squad Leader on the PC? I have always been dissappointed that a true SL game was never released, and have been looking for the nearest I can get since.

Steel Panthers came close in some respects, but didn't include some of the small immersive points such as leaders, etc.

Close Combat is a fairly decent attempt at something similar, and I enjoy the series but...it isn't Squad Leader.

The 'official' Squad Leader game was basically an updated version of SSI's 'Soldiers at War'. While I finished both games and had some fun (and hilarity) with both of them, they certainly are NOT Squad Leader.

I guess I really wished that there would be a full board game version built for the PC, with the same maps, counters, etc where the computer would look after the rules, book keeping, and add in a decent AI.

What are your thoughts?

I was about to say Close Combat but you already have that covered. That's the only game that I can think of that is close to Squad Leader.

Conflict of Heroes is a good tactical level game.
It is not ASL but it has the right feel to it without all the excessive details.
With the action point system, I think the battles have a natural flow to them which I think ASL lacked.
There are no leaders, it is abstracted as CAPs or Command Action Points which can be used by any unit to modify rallying and fighting.
So far I've made 3 conversions of ASL scenarios.
Hedgehog of Piepsk
Slamming of the Door
Hill 621

Double Deuce has made a couple of conversions as well.

The maps and OOBs convert fairly well, although some adjustments have to be made.
Check out the COH forum and have a look at the maps.

Jamm, believe me, I have my eye on Conflict of Heroes, and am quite close to buying. Just made a thread over there with some questions for the devs to clear up my doubts.

As for your commentary, note that I didn't say Advanced Squad Leader

I said Squad Leader. The original. Of which I use even to play ASL scenarios. I agree with you totally that ASL games quite often do not 'flow' and players end up getting bogged down in rules book keeping, arguments, and other rubbish. Hence why I still use the old SL rule (including the 'Cross of Iron' rules, without any further gamette additions unless they strike me as a good idea).

So, you could say we are of one mind regarding this.

The conversions that yourself and DD have made I noted some time ago, which is making me even more lean towards giving CoH a go. If I get the game, I will hit both of you up on tips for scenario making, especially dealing with the AI.

You get a whole lot more with the Steel Panthers series than you ever will out of Close Combat an it's very few scenarios per game pak. Nothing has ever come closer to "Squad Leader" to me than the Steel Panthers series. I use the HQ units as I would the Leaders in Squad Leader and of course the breakdown of the companies to feel more like squads. The SP maps have always reminded me of Squad Leader though almost idential in types of terrain and features.

Another game that I enjoy that reminds me of Squad Leader are the origional Combat Mission series of games. You have lots of individual squads in that game and you and create large battles with many squads.

Probably one of the oldest simular versions of Squad Leader would have been "Computer Ambush" by SSI but it didn't have many maps or scenarios and got old pretty fast but was still a lot of fun and at least it was simi turn based.

Another game though of a different setting but still with the use of basically one squad was the X-Com series and there's another more WW2ish Squad level game Silent Storm Gold. It's pretty good up until the alienlike weapons it introduces. But, it's certainly Squad level based.

You might also like to try and take a look at some of the HPS Squad level games like Squad Battles of the Pacific or Eagle Strike.

Then last and kinda least is the Eric Young's Squad Battles series of the Western Front.

Developers are so interested in Graphics these days it's hard to get a game that really has the look and feel of a Squad Leader game. There's one that's been in the making for over 5 years now Heroe's of Stalingrad or something like that but I don't think it's ever going to see the light of day myself. The developer talks a good release of it but doesn't deliver anything.

From the looks of it, CoH appears to be close. I bought it when it came out, but haven't had a chance to play yet. Another one you might look at is Panzer Command Ostfront. I've made two SL conversions for it (Piepsk and Hill 621). I was a Squad Leader fan myself and for me PCO came closest to the kind of play I enjoyed with SL (which is one reason I became involved with PCO).

But be warned, there are no leaders in PCO (though there are HQ units). There is a Demo out so it's easy to give it a try.

Also, I might be a bit prejudiced since I'm a member of the dev team.

Thanks
rick

Already own it, along with the earlier two games in the Panzer Command series.

Yes, I forgot to mention the '3D' games that have similar gameplay; Panzer Command series and Combat Mission series. I enjoy them both very much....

...but I would still love an SL 'board game' on the PC

I agree with RTWfreak, I had the most fun with the Steel Panthers series and I also had the most fun the original Squad Leader + COI.

I fully expect to delve once again into Steel Panthers when I get bit by that bug again.

I had good fun with Close Combat IV and V too, not bad, some quirks, but fun.

I did not enjoy the COH board game.

The old Computer Ambush game was more man to man, akin to the old SPI 'Sniper' game than it was like AH's Squad Leader series. Fun game, but different by a lot.

Could you list the characteristic features of the Squad Leader?

HPS Squad Battles I'd say are the closest.

Conflict of Heroes is probably the way to go.

But if you want to get THE BEST squad level turn-based of all time - it is HPS Squad Battles. They take a lot of time and patience, but once you get there.., man, there are the best.

PS - If graphics mean something to you then forget HPS.

PPS - Wodin, I did not see your post. +1 to you

I made a mod for both HPS Red Victory and AOTR which I feel improves the graphics..well the 2D ones anyway. I was pretty pleased with the results.

I was going to do the same for the other games but ran out of steam.

sarge, you have been around long enough than to issue what sounds like an open invtation. You may not always get brilliant conversation from me, but instead need to deal with the creatures such as warspite1, planner3, wodin, or GOD-FORBID:ilovestrategy.
