Is it necessary for the Squadron Commander to be 'active' (i.e. not in squadron reserve) for his leadership traits to effect his squadron in combat?

I find that in air-to-air or air-to-ship encounters the squadron commanders die at an alarming rate and I very quickly run out of worthwhile replacement commanders.

AFAIK, as long as they are listed as "leader" in the squadron general panel, they don't need to be active fliers. So they can be inactive but still leaders and so affect the performances of the squadron with their stats

Anyone con confirm?

I prefer non-pilot leaders, because they cannot get killed like pilots.
