Just another Steam rant I suppose... - 10/6/2012 2:51:00 PM

Status: offline 		I finished a few scenarios in a campaign of Dawn of War II. I close down my computer and retire for the night. I open up my copy of DoWII and I get all kinds of error messages about my copy of DoWII being "out of sync" or something with the "steam Cloud" (What the hell is this Cloud? Did someone at STeam pass gas to create this cloud or something?) I have NO idea what the problem is or how to fix it. I just want to play my game. So I click "OK" on some confusing pop ups which mean nothing to me from Steam and then open my game to the campaign I was playing. So now all the games I played last night disappeared and I am back at a previous scenario in the campaign which I had already played.

First off I bought a hard copy of DoWII. I did not want "Steam" but the hard copy forced me to create a STeam log on to play the stupid game. WTF??? Why is it that every other company is able to create hard copies of a game wihtout using "Steam" but apparently THQ isn't? This is the height of stupidity! I thought Steam was about selling download copies of games over the internet, not about registering and syncing hard copies with some stupid "cloud" in cyberspace.

I can't begin to relate how frustrated I am with computers these days. People are always trying to "fix" things which aren't broken and they just end up breaking the stupid things. This has got to be the most retarded methodology I have ever seen.

Status: offline 		I am sure someone with a more powerful brain can provide a better answer, but I think I can help with the "SteamCloud" and having to start from scratch on a previously saved game. If this is incorrect, well, I have only wasted 5 seconds of your life.

A lot of the Steam games save to the Steam Cloud which is NOT on your hard drive. When you go to the SAVE window or LOAD window, look around and see if you see button for things like "Steam Cloud" or "Hard Drive." The Steam Cloud saves allow you to open up saved games from different computers.

All the other complicated stuff about the "sync" windows, etc.., Someone with a large brain may be able to help you with that.

Status: offline 		I hear you, so true.  Thats why I am sticking to Matrix games/Ageod and table top wargaming.  Too many changes(steam and others).  After awhile you just get tired of it.  You spend 50-60 bucks on a game and you still can't play it unless you have a internet connection/DRM's.  Thats one reason I still do boardgaming.

Thanks Titanwarrior. Matrix uses a tried and true formula for selling games. And it WORKS! Why can't other gaming companies take their heads out of their posteriors and simply sell games without all the stupid gimmicks?

Status: offline 		Saves from steam registered games are stored at the steam cloud at times. If a glitch happens use the syncronize option or whatever it was called (had it a few times since I use steam a lot) and it will be fixed in a few seconds.

The problem is I DID syncronize the game and it screwed up my progress. How was I to know that the "cloud" had a different save than I did? I like DoWII but I really don't like the fact that they forced me to get on Steam when I bought a H A R D C O P Y O F T H E G A M E. Doesn't anyone in the gaming industry know what "hard copy" means anymore? This and Blizzard's online deal with Starcraft II really do a disservice to the gaming community IMO. If I purchase a hard copy it is because I want to play the game independently without any hassles forcing me to sit for an hour while the game automatically downloads the latest update I really don't care about or whatever.

Status: offline 		iirc I had two option how to syncronize. To adapt the save to the cloud version or to the version on my computer. The phrase of the question how to restore was kinda imprecisely tho and I was pleased that the save was were I left the game. Of course not optimal. I understand your angryness. Before this happened the first time I had also no idea what the hell a steam cloud is.

Status: offline 		I've got like 100 of games on Steam, and never had any issues with it. Very often a problem is made because people are not reading the messages (it's not only issue with steam, and it happens to me).

Status: offline 		You can also choose where to load a game from. On my games that use Cloud I can choose to load my saves from the Cload or from my local HDD.

I had your issue once where I played a game and lost my internet connection when saving and my game got out of sync. Next time I started up the game I choose to load the game from my local HDD which had the most current save. Then when I saved again my game got back in sync because it was able to upload to the Cloud.

I never have done it because I never have trouble, but there is an option to disable Steam Cloud altogether.

I will gladly trade the occasional hassle for 75% off games.
I have played more games because of Steam deals than I ever would have gotten to play otherwise.

And that leaves more money for my GF to go shopping with :(

Status: offline 		I like Steam cloud. I can play Skyrim on my desktop and when I go to my laptop to play Skyrim the same saved game is there. I also love being able to just click on install if I ever need to reinstall a game.

..and with a Matrix game I simply copy/paste the save folder onto a flash drive, take it to my office, and dump the saves into my notebook to continue playing, and not needing the internet to do it...I'm not knocking your reason for liking Steam Cloud, just pointing out that it is really no big deal as you can do something similiar with any game...

Status: offline 		Steam cloud is great for when you need to reinstall. Your saved games are still available even if you dont save them to a disk yourself.

People have always complained about progress and this is no different.
The reasons are always the same......the old way worked fine......I cant be bothered to learn something new....etc.

The same was said of the horseless carriage,.....the washing machine,.....aircraft......EVEN THE PC.

The answer is very simple. You can adapt to new tech.....or you can get left behind.

In this case the "new way" is superior to the "old way".

You dont need to have a flash drive to use the cloud,...so yes its much better. So ot only do you not need to keep up with disks,...and flash drives,....but you can save money since you dont need to buy them................

Status: offline 		Well Dan,...sadly,...when very few are having a problem,but most are not........its usually on the end having the problem.

Take for instance...steams "customer service". I have used it several times,...never an issue. Many people whop post here and use steam have used it,.....again....without an issue. I am willing to bet you dont use the e-mail adress you signed up with on steam. If so there is a way to fix that,.....try reading the support forum.

Edit- If I have time later,... I might actually look and see if I can find something to steer you towards that might help.

Are you saying that you don't know how to add a third party product to Steam?
To do that go to the tab on the top row and then click games and on the drop down menu click activate a product on Steam.

Or am I misunderstanding you? If you are having a problem with the game itself, their customer service cannot help you. You get support on the actual games themselves from the developer. All Steam customer support can do is help you with log in, payment and issues with the Steam software itself.

One example of a problem is Metro2033 which I bought from
GG and needs to be activated on Steam. I have many products like this. Most work.
Not this one. Steam says it works. It won't. Steam says re-install. I do. Steam says
it works. It won't. Steam says re-install. etc. More than 90% of products I have
bought from Steam or that require Steam are OKAY. When I have had problems
with products from other vendors over the years they have not repeatedly told me
it was working when it wasn't. That was my point. I had a problem with a product
here on Matrix. The Matrix people helped me find the problem (my anti-virus was deleting
the EXE file! without telling me) in very short order. They took my word that it wasn't working
instead of "Looks okay here." That is all.

Status: online 		I am not going to say that I have never had an issue with Steam, but in my experience it is a stable platform and I can download my games on a brand new PC without having to fish about for patches (and installing them in the correct sequence). Sure there are some games being sold which require a persistent internet connection to be played, by they are in the extreme minority (and as always, buyers beware). All of my Steam games save for one can be played with no internet connection.

Plus you cannot simply beat some of the deals: I bought Company of Heroes day of release for $49.99 and trying to install that game now on a new machine equates into hours of downloading GB's worth of patches. I say F-it one day and purchased the entire franchise (COH vanilla, Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor) for $9.99 - all updated and ready to download. When I moved to my new gaming rig, it took me about 70 minutes to download the games onto the new HDD (and Steam remembers my user name, password and save points).

The most glaring deal I picked up was last weekend when I scored Rome: Total War + Barbarian Invasions for $1.00. I'm sorry, but you can't beat that with a stick.

Status: offline 		I am pretty certain you can disable it from saving to the cloud.

1. Right click the game in your steam library
2. Select properties
3. Go to the Updates tab
4. At the bottom un-check Enable Steam Cloud synchronization

You also don't need to be online to play, you can enable a game to play in offline mode.

The reason you had to use Steam is that the multiplayer makes use of the Steam service. It was worse when it was using Microsoft Games for Windows Live.

Check for support at GG. More than likley you have to get a key from GG or something else in order to get their version of the game to work with Steam.

Status: offline 		I have used Steam since the client was introduced (back in the days of CS) and, like Ranger, I can't say I've never had a problem. But the problems were few, and have thus far been resolved to my satisfaction. I enjoy Matrix games...but I can't say I'm a fan of the product delivery compared to Steam.
Cost of the games aside, I have never had a problem painlessly downloading my Steam games to any and every computer I've used. Unless the company goes under, the games will always be available to me...unlike here at Matrix (see my posts in tech support thread and forum). The games on Steam are always updated to the latest patch...but I can still download mods or use an older patch if I want (i.e. TW series).
Trying to log on to the forums here can be an obtuse and frustrating process (i.e one login for matrix games, one for forums) where on Steam I have one login that I can set to auto login and be happy.
I very much want to support Matrix...I love what they do..but that desire is hampered by the obsolete product delivery and website/forum setup, by the high cost of the games and by the inability to play the games I have purchased at that high price. Just my views...your mileage may vary.

Status: offline 		I adore Matrixgames product delivery because once I have it it's mine for as long as I keep a good backup of the setup.exe and the cd keys even though Matrixgames will store them for you in the members section as well. I don't have to worry if Matrixgames goes down for maint or there is a problem with the distribution servers or other technical things I've experience with Steam and I don't have to worry if they (Matrixgames) go out of business. The games I bought from them are mine forever. That is not the case with Steam. Steam also controls your account and if they think you've done something they don't like they can Ban that account much like EA and I don't like that one bit because I might call someone stupid or ignorant or an idiot out of rage one day and get my account banned and all those games I bought would be forfeit. And don't give me this bs if I don't act that way I won't have to worry about it. Everyone loses their temper from time to time and throws out a few choice words they regret later on.

LOL. Nope, won't argue with ya. But I will submit that you know the consequences of doing so...can't put the blame on Steam, or EA.

Disagree. I have my CD keys...its the game download links in the members section that aren't working for me for some reason that customer support can't solve. I repeat...I have purchased and have a legal CD key, but can't download the game onto a new computer. And the Matrix answer to that is to shrug their shoulders and say 'too bad'. No bueno, mi amigo.
I actually bought the hard disks when I purchased the games, but I have no idea where they are or if I still have them. I move every 2-4 years (military) so packing CD's is a pain in the kiester. That's why I personally prefer the Steam format...my games are always available. Here, obviously, they are not. Different strokes for different folks.
