CV Wasp in the attached save is showing overloaded with 88 planes, even though the total of the squadron sizes is 87 (not overloaded). I think it's VF-71, there's a plane that went into maintenance in addition to the 36 ready; it seems there should be 35 ready, 1 maintenance, and 2 reserve. Is this working as designed?

A related question is whether the display is different than what actually happens in combat. Wasp (and friends) ended up in combat with KB and I did see CAP from VF-71, so I don't know if the CAP can launch while overloaded, the overloaded fixed itself before combat (2 day turns so it might have, the carrier battle was day 2), or if the display isn't synced with the actual fly-or-no fly checks. We're running animations off, so I can't easily see if the non-cap launched.

If it did clear up day 1, this might not have affected the day 2 carrier battle, but it just as easily could have so it seems an interesting question as to whether CVs should be able to be overloaded if the total squadron complement meets the capacity*115%.

There are 36 ready, 1 in maint and 1 in reserve for VF71.
On day 1, VF71 didn't fly because of the 88 planes. On day 2, this dropped to 87 which enabled the planes to fly. I suspect that the 'maint' plane went into reserve on repair.
That being the case 'maint' should be treated like 'in reserve' for the purpose of counting planes.

Thanks. So to make sure I have this, with the current code, the plane in maintenance does count against 115%, so to be safe we should make sure either A) The total "TOE" strength of our squadrons has a few planes of margin to the 115% or B) None of the squadrons has reserve planes.

I had noticed this behavior early on in playing. As a consequence, I always re-size my groups to give me a minimum of one unused carrier space, per plane type. Of course, the issue here is that some groups are not able to re-size for quite some time and have those constant red numbers showing.

Similar problem but with a difference -
I'm playing a PBEM game (Stock campaign #2 V1.0.6. 1108r9) as the Japanese in July 42 and I had lost a 3 CV TF who were absolutely killed at Suva. I thought it was just my carelessness as I was surprised that only 7 Zeroes showed as CAP when there was 80+ F in the TF. (30% CAP).

Now what I'm seeing is EVERY CV in my CV TF'S are listed as being overstacked. Using the Junyo as an example I have 53 plane capacity. Junyo is carrying 18 A6M2 Zeroes (14 flying/0 maint-damaged/4 reserve), 11 Vals (9 flying/2 maint-damaged/0 reserve) and 6 Kates (6 flying/0 maint-damaged/0 reserve). The screen shows Junyo in red as 53/71 when I'm actually carrying 35 planes! The Hiryu is even worse but I didnt write down or screenshot the ship stats...

One thing I noticed was when the computer flew 2 Zeroes off the Hiryu by itself to Tulagi. I put the Hiryu in its own CVTF with escorts and started back for Rabaul. The Hiryu suddenly showed the correct number of aircraft. Also one of my CVE's (Unyo?) is carrying 27 A6M2 Zeroes and 21 Kates and it is in the same CV TF as the Hiryu was. It shows the correct number of planes as 48/48...

I know there is a penalty for too many planes in an TF... but there was NOT over 100 planes in the TF that got sunk @ Suva. It was supposed to be a sweep heavy CVTF to attrit the F's @ Suva...
I have 3 CV TF's right now - 9 total CV/CVL/CVE + no TF has over 80 planes right now and all but Hiryu and Unyo are in red... what to do?

EDIT: wpae12 password wilson (from the Tom Hanks castaway movie ... get it? lol)

I'm not looking at the game right now, but - are you sure that the A6M2 is a carrier capable model? I seem to recall that at least one of the Zero upgrades is not carrier capable. When you put non-carrier capable single-engine aircraft on a carrier they take up lots of extra space (no folding wings and such) and the game takes that into account with a stacking penalty. Also they are allowed to fly off the carrier to transfer to a land base, but can not fly missions from the carrier.

Non-carrier capable planes take up more space. The Zero group on CV Junyo is not carrier-capable.

Witpqs and Michael,
A6M2 is the beginner Zero - says its carrier operable... The A6M3 or 3a is the one not carrier capable IIRC... I'll go back and check but I don't remember any CV fighter upgrades yet.
but 7 of 9 CV/CVL/CVE? All of my lg carriers (eg; 71 planes) are in RED showing more planes than I'm carrying... CV Junyo just came out of trials enroute to Truk, I have'nt even done anything with them!

Waaggghhhh!!!! I'm feelin like a Charlie Brown football moment... Damn Lucy!

Thank you for your help - I'll post what I find here.

Witpqs and Michael,
OK I'm guessing that I somehow made the A6M3 the default upgrade for the IJN... I'll have to change it back and refit the airgroups... Stupid Stupid Stupid!!!
Wasted planes and nights!

Thank you for your help!

I think this happends quite often .. I know I my first PBEM game my IJ opponet was perplexed until I reminded him to look at teh carrier status .... maybe a red alert "NON-CARRIER OPERATIONS" or someething when non-carrier capable aircraft are asked to do operations from a carrier rather than total silance .??

Must've been fun flying those non-carrier capable Zekes on board, or do they send kits

Would it be easier to make the aircraft stay damaged if not carrier capable??
