I'm in a late 42 pbem game and I've ran into a problem. I can't seem to shoot down B24's. the allied player is flying his 4e bombers at 15k or higher, a house rule we just added. Any ideas?
FW 190's are not an option.

Nicks and Tojos would be my best guess at this stage of the war.

One thing to appricate .... operational losses and bombing effectiveness. Damaged aircraft have some P(x) of not returning, and those damaged aircraft that do return have to spend some time in matinaintance of these some will roll the die to be scrapped Then look at combat results where no resistance vs. combat results where no planes are shot down but you put up resistance .. way different ..

So your success metrics might not be exclusively # of kills ...

yes, damaged a/c are less likely to make it home and spend more time in the hanger. b24's are a beast to bring down and my tojo's are busy. that's the price I pay for loseing the initiative.

Tojo IIa is an interim airframe. Get the IIc as soon as you can, as the upgunned version is better versus all comers. Long-term control is going to rely on N1K1-J (George), Frank and A7M series. J7W (Shinden) is potent in late war vs. 4ebs.

Other things that will help:

1. Numbers. 2x the incoming bombers will be helpful.
2. Radar. Allows CAP to be in position for intercept.
3. Altitude settings in CAP. Better to be at 17,000 for 15,000ft. intercept than at 25,000 feet-sometimes the bombers will get by.
4. Armament. See above.
5. Flak. If he's flying at >12,000 feet, look towards your 10cm AAA instead of the standard 75mm stuff.

Good luck. 4ebs are the Allies greatest weapon system in the game and a real headache for the Japanese long-term.

Better will be 18.000ft. If he flying at 15K with bombers then escort fighters are flying at 17000ft (always 2000ft higher) so 18000ft will give you optimal use of dive bonus against escort fighters and bombers.

It is always good to have something in air. Even one plane will reduce bombing accuracy. I notice that especially at night. They do not have to intercept, only being in air is reducing accuracy.

And what is most important for fighters to fight well against 4E firepower.
Like Chickenboy write: firepower (guns, more guns), numbers(as many as passable), armor (reducing losses)

his wave attacks have slowed down, I have radar and I'm adding more aa to the area. That should help some.

The art of shooting down US 4Es with IJN/IJA fighters can be summed up in the phrase: 'spray and pray'. The more fighters you have, the better your chances. Fighters with 20mm cannons do tend to work better though. And set your cap fighters at different altitudes, I range mine from10k (Nates) all the way up to 22-23k. Gives you a better chance to engage them.

Even if you can't shoot any down outright, if you manage to damage some, a few will become ops losses. Every damaging shot counts, even it doesn't kill them outright.
