I noticed this problem, too. Something similar happens when a pirate ship attacks. Even when the enemy is within range, the base acts only in defensive mode by firing weapons only when the enemy fires first. In many cases, this is too late to survive the attack.

The sensors should pick up if it is friend or foe and proceed to open fire if it a foe. It would be good if the devs would change this.

Just a thought, but could it be anything to do with proximity sensors or scanners? I know from your screengrab that it looks close to the station but if the station has not got sensors how would it know to fire at it if didn't know it was there? Not saying that is the case, but it makes sense?

Because the space monster did not declare war.The station code does not register them as a threat.

Proximity sensors have nothing to do with close range combat. Your ships don't need proximity sensors to identify and respond to hostile forces in the system, do they? AFAIK, they only help figure out where a ship is trying to flee to through hyperspace.

As a related note, I'm curious if planetary ion cannons ever fire on silvermists (no effect on any other beast) in range. I'd guess it's a related bit of code.

I think proximity sensors are long range scanner with very short range. I believe I have spotted a pirate base/ship flying past a system with a small fleet. That is flying "over it" on the map, but never exiting hyperspace. I can not rule out that a mining ship did not visit the system at the same time, though.

And I agree that you don't need them to see stuff in the system.

As for that base, I figure the researchers were all to busy researching to look out the window. They haven't noticed anything wrong yet. You know how those kind of people are...a
