the bloodiest single day in American Military history occurs at the Battle of Sharpsburg or as you Yankees call it Antietam....around 23,000 on both sides.

Being Canadian by birth, I don't have an ax to grind over this war, but I've always been told by my New Orleans wife that the word is damnyankees. Hal

Speaking of that other little tussle, the Canadians have what looks to be a pretty good site about it. I just learned of it last night and haven't had time to take a critical look at it. What we in the US tend to forget is the role this war had in our friends to the north eventually becoming a separate country!

Oh yes, I recall reading about that little scrap. I think we did you the great favor of burning Washington DC to the ground, or parts thereof. Would you like it done again? Lots of folks feel as if it happened again it would be a good thing for the country!

no thanks...but my dad wouldn't mind it if you razed Buffalo again. He says downtown is a trash heap and the Bills suck again this year.

On a semi-related note, I was informed tonight -- on the classical music station, no less -- that this is also the 40th anniversary of the first episode of some sitcom set in the Korean War. The movie buffs will know that Robert Altman directed the movie, but how many know that his 14-year-old son wrote the lyrics for "Suicide is Painless"?

Absolutely not true. A damnyankee is a damnyankee. Always. Cradle to grave. [;)]

lol You are so right. Even after nearly a quarter century, I can still sense the slight distaste a native born "northwesterner" or "Seattlite" exudes if i'm asked my point of origin.
