I was just browsing around looking for newly released computer games and stumbled upon AGEOD's Alea Jacta Est. It looks like an interesting enough game and is very reasonably priced ($19.99), but I noticed something very odd about it. It comes in three different "levels" of purchase - basic ($19.99), some term basically meaning "intermediate" ($100.00) and another term pretty much meaning "advanced" ($250.00).

You do get a bit of something for the extra buck - a free add on to the game that is going to be released in a couple of years. But some of the extras sound like they are straight out of a college annual fund campaign - your name listed in the credits, little honorary icons under your username in the game's forum, and a generic leader in the game will be named after you.

I'm not sure what's more pitiful, that the game company would resort to such tactics to bring in extra cash, or the pitiful souls that actually buy these "accessory" versions of the game.

I like this. Make the game cheap enough where it could have good sales from non-traditional customers. And you have deluxe editions for your most hardcore fans. Maybe they are counting on selling enough deluxe packages so that they can offer the game itself for $20.00

This was not even on my radar but I will probably buy a copy just because of the low price point.

What sales policy is worse?
Offering a deluxe version of a game for those most hardcore fans, maintaining a low-priced version.
or
Selling a game of 5, 6 or 7 years old at full price (50, 60 U$S)
or
"Abandon" a game full of unresolved bugs.

I never thought of it this way - the insanely devoted fans who want the pointless whistles and bells foot part of the bill for normal customers. Kind of Robin Hooodesque - rob the idiots to feed the reasonable. Too bad car companies didn't do the same thing. I'd be able to by my base model Camry for 10k as long as they'd charge 50k for the model with the fancy rims and satellite radio.
