Is there any way to tell an automated constructor to "pretty please with sugar on top do NOT try to repair ANY derelict spacecraft that are SURROUNDED BY GIANT KALTORS!!"

Have you tried arming your constructors?

I wanted to avoid that due to the higher maintenance cost. I had hoped there was some kind of "tweaking" for automated that I had missed.

Ok cheaper option - you can edit the ship design to set the constructor stance to flee when it sees an enemy.

The AI is too stupid. I had it insist on building a mine in a cloud with 10-15 kaltor's until I took manual control of it... When I finally built a second constructor and put it on auto, it was back to that darn caslon cloud...

It is not hard to see how "mark system hands off to the AI" appears on the wishlist at regular times.

Marking systems with "hands off" for the reason you outline would do nothing to stop the AI empires falling foul of the issue. I'd rather Elliot left a fix until it could be implemented in the AI code for the benefit of all the non-player AIs.

I manually use all of my ships apart of inner sector escorts and fleets. Therefore my constructors never build what or where I don't want them to.

I agree. Give the AI some sense and memory. Constructor/base hunted by wildlife? Stay clear until mopped up, make a mission for a fleet to clear it.

Did we just spot 15 kaltors? Mark the area as very dangerous, and keep clear until a huge fleet has spare time (and maybe even later).

I control my construction ships manually, but there are times when I will send them into deep space to uncharted star systems. I escort them with two frigates to protect against the occasional Kaltor, Space Slug, or Ardilus. An escort of two military ships will not survive against a whole swarm of Kaltors, but will usually eliminate most pests. And of course, Silver Mist require something special to deal with them. The construction ship will escape and return to finish it's project later when the menace is gone.

Arming construction ships makes them act aggressive and attack things. I really don't what that to happen.

This is my first real DW game and I do not want to manually control all my constructors because I'm afraid that I'll accidentally neglect to mine enough of some resource and start running short of it.

You could kill the kaltors... A decent fleet with carriers (and extras) are good at clearing those.

Just for record I normally have around 25-30 constructors and I never control them manually!

The only manual intervention I give them is by queuing/building mines via the colony expansion screen.

I just saw something that made me LOL. A string of alien warships passed by one of my planets. I'm thinking "That looks like most of their fleet, where are they goi...ohhh, HAHAHAHAHA!!" They were headed towards the "Debris Field" with all of those GK's I mentioned. Five minutes later they came limping back!

Red_Dwarf - If they did come back, then maybe, just maybe, they cleared the Kaltors, and you should try getting your Construction ships there before them.
