Nick is taking time off to go watch "The Hobbit."

Melbourne & Sydney - recent their forts are up to level 7. Those construction engineers are sent to other bases.

Eat you heart out JFBs. I just got another 8 SeaBees. So many construction engineers, so little stacking space available at forward bases.

Amchitka - Unloading continues daily;
15th - 16 F4Fs with 68 SBDs & 30 TBFs = 11c, 6b, 2s, 9r;

Notes:
Adak - base was without damage. Base was undeveloped - Port 1(5) & AF 1(4). I have 357 engineers/engineer vehicles. It shouldn't take long to build it up. More troops and supplies on the way.

Amchitka - I have 2x his unadjusted AV, but haven't attacked. I will use it and then Attu as training for my bombers of the North and my ships to build up experience levels. I need to master how to conduct BB TF missions from bases close (Adak) and from farther away (Dutch Harbor). What is the speed to get them to arrive at night and then during day. I'm still somewhat confused here. Answers guys??

I just turn on the range circles and see how far they will go in each phase. Then I pick a spot that is within one phase of movement of the target and send the SCTF there the day before the bombardment. At the beginning of the next turn I change the mission to Bombardment and send it in.

BTW, you needn't worry about the TF going at high speed all the way if you send it as a Bombardment TF from over a day away. It will proceed at mission speed until the computer calculates it is time to run in. The computer almost always gets it in at night, unless something unusual delays the TF. Doing it "manually" as above gives you a bit more control over the final decision to go in or not.

I try to position the force 1 hex closer than their max range, so they don't stop in case something slows them a bit. Set them to "mission speed". I don't use waypoints, as that was what was screwing it up under ealier patches... It is supposed to be fixed I think but haven't tried again.

Cheers

Rob

Amchitka continues to be a battle ground.
Gilberts & Marshalls increased activity.

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft;

Subs:
Silverside is 4 East of Ponape. She is run over by CA Furutaka, 1 CL, 4 DDs on 25th. Flying Fish is run over by same TF on 28th 4 SW of Kwajalein.
I-21 is 5 West of Pearl and get a TT hit on Grouper (she limps to within 2 hexes of Pearl with over 90 flood damage). Will she make it??
I-21 has moved to 3 SW of Pearl and my 3 SC ASW TF finds her. They get two hits and force her to surface, but don't report her sunk. This is at least the second time a SC only ASW TF has gotten a sub to surface, but did not sink her. I have ordered a DD to merge with my 2 ASW TF to add support and larger guns.
Tunny was unlucky at Amchitka, but get a TT hit on a PB at Attu.

Our first major naval engagement of the war. I lose a CA as we had crossed the "T" and got into a knife fight vs sword fight with his surface warships. I tell Nick I still have 22 BBs, 20 CAs, 25 CLs, & 111 DDs with more on the way.

Nick voices lots of frustration about his inability to defeat these troops.

28th - (from Akagi & Kaga) 30 A6M2 Zero, 16 A6M5 Zero, 50 B5N2 Kate, & 34(1) D3A1 Val = 30c;

Notes:
Aleutians - I was thinking if I could save my brave Canadians stuck here. It took me some time to realize 'no' and then I had to channel MacArthur and plan to land at empty bases later to isolate this base. In this mod, I have plenty of construction engineers. There are multiple dot bases between Amchitka and Attu that can be built up. I hope to keep 4th Division here in a POW camp. Two Combat Engineer units at Kodiak are 'now' prepping for bases further south.

Marshalls - Nick has moved a CA centered SC TF to this area while I only have a few PT boat TFs and only 2 DDs. Plans are to send BB South Dakota, 2 modern CLs, and the Fletcher DDs (after their 11/42 upgrades). Mili is next on the invasion schedule.

Burma - see screenshot. I'm moving south out of India and it looks like he is not defending the eastern part of the country. PPs will be spent here for the next few months to free up troops for the re-conquest.

New month and change in my writing style.

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft;

Subs:
I-169 is to east of Gilberts and misses my transports. I run into subs in this area and now have 2 ASW TF made up of SubChasers (SC) that 'try' to sink them with little success.
Sealion acts like a minesweeper at Port Blair, but should make it back to Colombo. I need to learn quicker that Nick likes to mine his major ports.

CVs:
Akagi and Kaga are no longer to west of Amchitka. Thus, all Japanese CV/CVL are MIA. Mine continue to finish up upgrades.

India/Burma:
Mandalay is swept by the CW fighters (Hurricanes) and P-38s on 2nd. The 56 Tojo on CAP for the first wave quickly shrinks as more 16 plane air groups of Hurricanes and 25 plane groups of P-38s arrive (12 separate strikes). There is no CAP by 5th strike. Losses = 14 Tojo vs 4 Hurricanes and 0 P-38s per Combat Report. However, it is almost equal when you look them up afterwards. I cannot do this daily, yet. Ledo has C-47s transporting supply to China, but op losses keep them from getting to fill out to 25 planes each.

China:
North - Yenan is still targeted. The two corps to east of Hankow are attacked from air daily. What I have learned, but may be wrong, is troops in non-base hexes will not be retreated or destroyed till odds are equal to or greater than their fort levels. I have mine at level 4 forts. He has another failed attack (413J:916A).

South - Wuchow, Kunming, Kukong have their AF attacked. Precious supply being destroyed is the only vital consequence to me. Kweilin is swept by Oscars as I used this base before for my P-40s and P-38s.

Australia:

South Pacific:

Central Pacific: -
Marshalls - Mili is hit by 2e bombers to destroy the static ground unit. Maloelap is swept by P-38s and then AF hit by 4e bombers (B-17s & B-24s). I've occasional run into CAP/LRCAP of Zero, Tojo, Nick, and Rufe. I usually come out ahead in the losses, but as Allied players know, you don't get many P-38s in '42. Considering the number of 500 lb bombs a B-24 carries and the still reduced number a B-17 carries (AF is still at 4 and needs to be 5 before full load), I'm still shocked how few hits I get while the Japanese do lots of damage to my Chinese AFs. Why?!?

North Pacific:
Adak is steadily being built up (Port 4 reached) and reinforced without interference. Sagigik which is 3 east of Adak has construction engineers landing to build up this base to support Adak just in case he gets offensive mined in the months ahead.

Notes:
Lots of logistics to discuss in days ahead.

Late fall lull continues...

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft;

Subs:
Stringray sinks a xAK between Milne Bay and Rabaul
S-23 and S-28 sink an xAKL and xAK at or near Amchitka. This area is a good place for the short legged S-boats to work in. S-28 sinks a PB in the afternoon phase.
Runner hits an xAK with one TT north of Truk. I have 4 Gato Class patrolling north of base.

CVs:
In hiding!

India/Burma:
Troops move south steadily and no troops encountered yet.

China:
North - Yenan is still targeted. The two corps to east of Hankow are attacked from air daily. Most of his Chinese air power is focused here and leaves my other AF alone. Another attack against these two Corps fails (263J : 535A).

South - Wuchow, Kunming, Kukong have their AF attacked. Kweilin is swept by 27 Oscars daily. Wuchow and Kukong have less than 100 supply at their bases, but the troops are 100% prepped and have forts 4 or better.

Australia:

South Pacific:

Central Pacific: -
Marshalls - Maloelap swept by P-38s followed by B-17/B-24s. On the 5th, I've gotten lazy and stopped sweeping Mili to provide LRCAP over Air HQ unloading at Makin (don't want Ms Nell or Ms Betty to visit). Nick makes me pay as 12 Zero and 11 Nick LRCAP Mili and I lose 21 B-25s. A whole months worth of production (20 planes per month) lost. I've done this twice now. I hope I don't need a third lesson before I learn. Also on 5th, 5 Tojo cannot slow down my B-17/B-24s over Maloelap.

North Pacific:
SC TF that will become a BB TF leaves Dora Harbor for Amchitka (CA Minny, CL Boise & Nashville, 7 DDs).

Notes:
One more three day posting and I will be caught up.

Late fall lull continues for another three days.

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft;

Subs:
Searaven is hit once by 2 PBs at Sabang.

CVs:
Yorktown and Wasp have 6 days left to finish upgrades at San Fran. Enterprise and Saratoga will be done in 3 days at Pearl.

India/Burma:
See the screenshot below.

China:
North - Yenan is still targeted. The two corps to east of Hankow are attacked from air daily.

South - Wuchow, Kunming, Kukong have their AF attacked. Kweilin is swept by 27 Oscars daily.

Philippines:
Bacolod, Iloilo, Baybay are finally invaded by Nick. His small xAKLs will be busy afterwards to get out all those resources.

Australia:

South Pacific:

Central Pacific: -
Marshalls - Maloelap swept by P-38s followed by B-17/B-24s. P-40s start to sweep Mili after my last fiasco here while I rotate 2e bombers in and out of Gilberts. Action heats up on 9th over Maloelap:
quote:

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 15
Ki-44-IIa Tojo x 5
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 11

Allied aircraft
P-38F Lightning x 22

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed
Ki-44-IIa Tojo: 1 destroyed
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-38F Lightning: 2 destroyed

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x P-38F Lightning sweeping at 25000 feet

Losses are actually 21 for him and only 3 for Allies in A2A. I lose another 2 P-38s to op losses. Nick is not too happy about his fighters performance, especially his Tojo.

Two SeaBees are going from Nonouti to Ocean Island to speed up the AF expansion 0(0).

North Pacific:
Amchitka - On 9th, I mess up, but not to bad. I had changed my SC TF over to a BB TF (CA, 2 CL, 7 DD), but forgot to change it over to "Retirement Allowed" and she "Remains on Station" during daylight. Thankfully, his 16 Zeros escorting in 3 Kates only gets a bomb hit on CL Nashville [26-11(1)-6(2)-0] during the daylight. My BB TF does well afterwards - 836c, 28b, 25s, 75r. As a result, I move some 2e bombers from Dora Harbor and Kodiak to see if I can close the AF (of course subject to winter weather up here).

Notes:
Burma - Unlike GreyJoy, Nick did not forward deploy closer to the India/Burma border (he is playing same mod, but at faster pace). Why not is the question that puzzles me. It looks like I will be able to capture the eastern part as quickly as I can march troops.

Not to go over and high jack GreyJoy's AAR, here is some info on Allied construction capabilities in DBB Scenario 30.

I have 10 of these units as of mid-Nov '42. They have 85 engineers total (Engineers + Engineer Vehilces + USA Const Eng Sq).

This can be exploited into a full fledged disaster. Once Allied armor is in the Irrawaddy Valley ... it is Katy Bar the Door .. All of Southeast Asia can be interdicted.

The Allies have 13 USN Special Construction Battalions. The have 51 Engineers total. The USN Spec Eng Sq also act like Naval Support, so these are great to go ashore with an invasion.

So, the Americans have 60 of these specialized construction units that allows quick building of any base regardless of what size it is. Can anybody say "island hopping" like MacArthur?

[Notes:
Burma - Unlike GreyJoy, Nick did not forward deploy closer to the India/Burma border (he is playing same mod, but at faster pace). Why not is the question that puzzles me. It looks like I will be able to capture the eastern part as quickly as I can march troops.

Imho, in this mod, the only winning strategy for Japan is to defend in the jungle, very forward, right on the borders. With stacking limits the allies will have quite an hard time to break your lines if you have time to dig in in the jungle.

If Nick doesn't do that, you should be able to penetrate in the jungle hexes and dictate the rithm of movements in Burma. Once you gets close to the plains...well, you know what happens next

So, the Americans have 60 of these specialized construction units that allows quick building of any base regardless of what size it is. Can anybody say "island hopping" like MacArthur?

...yes, i can confirm... in a couple of turns you can build an AF lvl 1 from scratch

Nov 1, 2, 3 :
Why?!?

The Japanese started the war in China in 1934 or 35. Their bomber pilots have been doing this for about six years! Also, the Chinese have virtually no AA and no fighter defence to make the bombers weave around during their attack. Besides, AFAIK the Japanese did not have pickle barrels for the allied bombardiers to aim at ...

Nov 10, 11, 12 :
Amchitka (Aleutians) and Marshalls are Allied points of concern still.

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft;

Subs:
None hit and my TT problems will continue for another few weeks.

CVs:
On 12th, enemy CVs spotted by PBYs out of Adak @ 148, 53 (10 west of Amchitka). I suspect it is CV Akagi and Kaga and 2 CVLs that were here before when 4th Division was unloaded at Amchitka.
Mine are finishing up upgrades.

India/Burma:
My troops continue to march south without opposition.

China:
North - Yenan is still targeted. The two corps to east of Hankow are attacked from air daily.

South - Wuchow, Kunming, Kukong have their AF attacked. Kweilin is swept by 27 or 30 Oscars daily.

Australia:

South Pacific:

Central Pacific: -
Marshalls - Maloelap is swept first by P-38s and then some B-17/B-24s hit the AF. At Mili, P-40s sweep daily. Makin AF to 4.

North Pacific:
Amchitka - Canadian Hurricanes and P-40s escort in B-18s and A-29s to hit the AF daily.

Sagigik goes to Port 1.

Notes:
The game overall is in a wait and see phase.

LRCAP and weather.

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft;

Subs:
Grampus is hit once off Townsville by four SCs. She will limp back to Aukland.
Gurnard and Herring each sink a PB within the Marshalls.

CVs:
His CV/CVLs (132 F, 83 B, 3 Aux) stay within one hex of Attu throughout. Nick whines that they fail to LRCAP his warships and transport at Amchitka. Weather is mainly Blizzard, so that may be a deciding factor on why they didn't fly (distance is 5 to 7 hexes, depending on the day).

Central Pacific: -
Marshalls - Maloelap is swept first by P-38s and then some B-24s hit the AF as B-17s now shift over to hitting the troops due to Abemama getting her AF to 5 allowing the B-17s there to carry full bomb loads. At Mili, P-40s sweep daily and A-20s hit the troops.

Sagigik goes to AF 1.

Notes:
The Aleutians continue to be an active side show. It will help as the next series of invasions will take place in early December in the Marshalls. I think he has 2 CVs (Akagi & Kaga) and 2 CVLs operating up here. He is reinforcing Amchitka and I hope I can get some force to the west of the base to cut it off (there is a dot base still mine between Amchitka and Attu).

CV Wasp and Yorktown will finish up their upgrade tomorrow and leave San Fran for Pearl. He is now very cautious with his CVs. I know if I was playing John 3rd, Adak would be hit by CVs and BB TFs.

Prepping for bases in South Pacific continue (Luganville, Efate, and Ndeni).

Suva and Nadi are nearing the red in supply, but 200k is less than 10 days away.

Burma and Amchitka.

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft;

Subs:
S-28 does not allow a damaged CL Kiso to escape from the Aleutians. On patrol due west of Amchitka, she hits hit with 2 TTs and then gets another 2 TTs hits to sink her.
S-38 sinks a PB at Kwajalein.

CVs:
CV Yorktown and Wasp along with 3 CVEs leave San Fran for Pearl. CV Akagi, Kaga, and CVE Taiyo leave Aleutians after a LRCAP trap works, finally.

India/Burma:
My troops continue to march south.
1 West of Katha - Three groups of 16 each Hurricane sweep. I find just the 55th Cav Rgt present. The Cav unit is easily pushed back towards Mandalay by an Indian Division and Brigade. Nick comments that it was smart for him not to defend up north. I hope he learns that was not true.

China:
North - Yenan is still targeted. The two corps to east of Hankow are attacked from air daily.

South - Wuchow, Kunming, Kukong have their AF attacked. Kweilin is swept by 27 or 30 Oscars daily.

Australia:

South Pacific:

Central Pacific: -
Marshalls - Maloelap continues to be swept by P-38s and then B-17s come in to hit the troops while B-24s hit the AF. I lose 2 P-38s vs 11 Zero and Nick on LRCAP over two days.
Mili - 25 P-40s or P-39s sweep to allow the A-20s to hit the troops. The single LCU is showing up as barely existing (100 troops, 8 guns).

North Pacific:

My losses were higher than I wanted, but I did draw his attention to this area. The question will be doe he keep these three CV/CVEs up in the North Pacific?? I hope to have them here long enough for me to get ashore in the Marshalls.

Screenshot shows air losses for 16th.

Nov 19, 20, 21 :
Burma re-invasions continues along with prep for the invasion of the Marshalls.

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft;

Subs:
Attu sees S-23 get a TT hit on an AK unloading troops. On the next day, S-18 hits another AK unloading. Then, S-23 comes back in and get another TT hit on another AK. Three days = 3 TT hits, not bad!!
I-22 misses the big resupply TF north of Vava'u headed for Suva with over 100k.

CVs:
6 American CVs along with CV Illustrious & CVL Hermes are at Pearl along with 4 CVEs. 2 American CV per TF with a CLAA, 3 CAs, & 8 DDs. The Brits go together. The 4 CVEs are in a 5th CV TF. They will be headed for Gilberts in a few days to support operations.

India/Burma:
The march through the jungle continues.

China:
North - Yenan is still targeted by over 30 Sallys. The two corps to east of Hankow are attacked from air daily.

South - Wuchow, Kunming, Kukong have their AF attacked. Kweilin is swept by 27 or 30 Oscars daily.

Australia:

South Pacific:

Central Pacific: -
Marshalls - Maloelap continues to be swept by P-38s and then B-17s hit the troops while B-24s hit the AF. At Mili, the last troops are destroyed by A-20s while P-39s sweep to avoid a CAP trap.

North Pacific:
Amchitka - A quite few days as I recover from the CAP/LRCAP trap.

Engineering: - Adak = AF 5; Pearl = Forts 9; Tarawa = Forts 4; Akyab = AF 5; Ocean Island = AF 1; Sagigik = AF 2; Abemama = Port 2;

Notes:
Mili Invasion TF leaves Pearl. Since the base is now empty, the 2 Tank will unload at Tabiteuea. The three New Mexico Class BBs are in bedded. The Nauru Island TF will leave on the 22nd. The Marshalls will be heating up throughout December.

Allied war machine cranks up!!

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft;

Subs:
RO-33 is hit once by the BB TF at Amchitka. RO-66 is unable to get a shot at this retreating TF between Amchitka and Adak.

CVs:
All Allied CV/CVL/CVE leave Pearl for the Gilberts and then Marshalls.

India/Burma:
The march through the jungle continues. An empty Warazup falls to a Chinese Corp. 3 groups of 16 Hurricanes sweep over the 55th Cav Rgt in clear terrain above Shwebo. 80 Blenheim inflict 401 casualties. A final strike of 32 B-25s destroy the last 25 troops. The 55th Cav is no more!!

China:
North - Yenan is still targeted by over 30 Sallys. The two corps to east of Hankow are attacked from air daily. On the 24th, a deliberate attack barely gets 1:1 odds. I was facing two divisions, two tanks, and three regiments.

Well, that is the plan. But on the 23rd, 11 Tojo and 11 Nick face 19 B-17s. I lose 3 bombers for 1 Tojo. Finally, 22(0) P-38Fs sweep in to find 3(1) Tojo and 9(3) Nick on LRCAP. There is still some LRCAP on 24th as 15(5) A6M2 Zero, 5(0) Tojo, 7(1) Nick vs 20(1) P-38F Lightning.

North Pacific:
Amchitka - With only light clouds overhead, the 16(1) P-40Ks sweep in to find 27(5) A6M3a Zero on CAP. The second wave of 6 P-40Ks destroy 2 more of the 6 A6M3a Zero. The day goes to the Warhawks!!
23rd -
quote:

Night Naval bombardment of Amchitka Island at 158,52

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3a Zero: 13 damaged
A6M3a Zero: 2 destroyed on ground
E13A1 Jake: 1 damaged

Allied Ships
CA Exeter
CL Capetown
CL Ceres
CL Hobart
CL Perth
DD Encounter
DD Electra
DD Caldwell
DD Woodworth
DD Farenholt

Japanese ground losses:
741 casualties reported
Squads: 3 destroyed, 6 disabled
Non Combat: 9 destroyed, 63 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Guns lost 12 (2 destroyed, 10 disabled)

Airbase hits 18
Airbase supply hits 9
Runway hits 87
Port hits 1

P-40Ks then find the skies empty on the 23rd.

Engineering: - None

Notes:
Nauru Island invasion TF leaves Pearl.

2x supply at a base - I let Tarawa fall below the magic level and thus my P-38s don't have drop tanks. Needless to say, my small xAKLs are loading supply at Tabiteuea to remedy this oversight.

The Allies have 6 fast (28 knot BBs) available. The South Dakota and Prince of Wales are going with the first wave of invasions (Mili and Nauru). Indiana is almost to Pearl from Panama as the newest addition. North Carolina, Washington, and Repulse will arrive in three days. These four will have a quick repair cycle and then head for Gilberts for the second series of invasions (Maloelap and Wotje). These four bases should be captured in December, I hope.

Marshalls info - There is just Mili and a small dot base SE of Kwajalien that can be built to level 5 AF to support 4e bombers fully. That is why the Gilberts are so important (especially for Japan to fortify).

48 B-17F and 48 B-24s leave Pearl for Gilberts. Time to bring in some more punch.

Rah Roh! As I have written before and as you already know . Warazup is the first step toward establsihing a north Burma toehold that cannot be dislodged ..If the IJA do not get serious and quick this will become a disaster in short order .. I like forming the 1 AUS Corps to jump off at Kaylemyo about this point in time to start the threat and cutoff theIJA forces reacting north .. I am suspecting that the Southern right cross with something is soon to follow .. [8D

I sooooo agree with this statement .. and why I believe the Marshalls are a much more lucritive thrust than the Solomons .. the threat moves toward neutralizing Truk .. and sets up a Carolines or Maranas thrust ..

I agree with Mr CrackAce, Burma is too lightly defended.

On the 26th, an empty Myitkyina fell. Recon flights show the dot base (Bhamo) to the SW between here and Lashio is empty. I have left Lashio un-recon to not give him ideas yet, but troops have started prepping for here. Mandalay has only 14k troops which is not enough. I have only three American divisions that need PP, so most of early '43 will go to freeing up more Indian troops.
