sounds like a v. interesting book, bushpsu, i hope i can check out this new book. i read a similar study from awhile back, 'Churchill & his Generals', which had chapters on many British commanders. my take was, Winston didn't have a deep-enough bench. IMO, George C. Marshall slots in a close 2nd behind George Washington as 'best American ever'. but i disagree (based on Ed Cray's biography) that he'd've allowed his personal feelings to influence key personnel decisions. his personal acquaintance w/ a commander's potential quality would've over-ridden friendship. he was quite ruthless in superannuating the 'old guard' in both the Regulars and National Guard after he became CoS, and chopped some heads during the post-Torch campaign in Tunisia. i'll read this new book, i'm avid to learn some more about the man & his motivations. if i can give you a back-atcha, the pair of books 'Dreadnought/Castles of Steel' by Robert Massie give a wonderful overview the cultural/political background that lead up to the confrontation between the Royal Navy & the High Seas Fleet in the Great War.
