There are a couple of squadrons available the East Coast, namely the 1stPG/94th&27th which have plenty of planes, but whenever I try to "steal" them by upgrading the squadrons with other available planes the P-38s don't show up in my pool. Am I doing something wrong and is there another way to get a hold of the planes ?

they will how up over the coming days, there is a delay for putting aircraft back into the pool. You'll see at the end of each ops report how many ac were put back into the pool and how many of each type are left to be put back into the pool.

Well on a "serious" note, the fact is that if you attempt to disband them (p-38s and others in shaded - permanently - restricted units) the message flashed upon your game screen after your attempt to disband is do you want to "permanently" loose the planes and pilots. There is no return to the pool, or that's what the message seems to suggest, strongly. To me, the unit just seems to sit there and train pilots on aircraft that are NOT at the front due to the fact that they are all in those very training units! Hal

Then again, you can do what I do. Upgrade to an airplane you don't really care about....P-400's,P-26's,P-36's,etc. Then disband. Or keep it for training.

True but that usually cost lots of PPs OR the aircraft to be upgraded to has none in the pool! I would love to upgrade all of them to P 26s, that'd be wonderful...

Then split the unit up. That way you don't need 24 P-26's. You need 8. And 8 of something else. And another 8.

I was able to get one squadron released fairly quickly. Disband a P36 squadron (unrestricted) in San Fran (units disbanded in SF seem to go into the pool with almost no delay). Change the upgrade path of another P36 squadron (I picked one at PH so they would already be closer to the front) to P38. Since it is unrestricted, you only need 1 in the pool for the upgrade, and their P36s also go into the pool. As soon as you hit 25 in the pool, you can 'upgrade' one of your restricted P38 squadrons to the P36 (I think the largest has 20 at start). Again, do it at SF so they go into the pool quickly, and your PH squadron can start drawing them in. (I also disband the HQ flights, to add to the pool, they aren't really all that useful otherwise). I do a similar process to free up some P40Es.

It uses the game, but I didn't take it as gamey, I am shifting the top fighters to the front, and using the P36s as trainers.

I'd recommend you slow up on rushing your P-38's to the front. You don't have many , and attrition will use them up quickly. Also, they are not yet the fighters that the P-38's will became. WHAT they do have is a slightly better range than the rest of your fighters. So I'd pick and choose where you use them, and use them where RANGE is the critical factor. You have a lot of P40E's , which is not a bad fighter at this stage of the war. Use the P-38's in a long range escort role, and fill the squadron with VERY experinced pilots, making it kind of an "elite" squadron. Another use I have for it is as a "fire brigade". The P-38s with drop tanks can "self deploy" over long distances rapidly (in a couple of turns). Put them in a central location, well back from bombing or bombardment attacks. Then you can rush them to where you need them in an emergency , when another fighter won't have the range to get there, or will take a couple of extra turns to arrive.

This is pretty much what I intend to do. It's a bit of a gamey thing, but I want an early war "all-star" squadron with guys like Wagner flying P-38s. I really love doing stuff like that in war games, like picking a favorite ship or unit and closely following it's way from 41-45.

I don't consider it a gamey thing at all. It is just managing resources. The early Marine air groups "upgraded" from the Wildcat to the Buffalo. What AW1Steve is suggesting is very similar to what Napoleon did with his Guard units.

This is what I do with the squadron I create early, I move it to Suva and use it's range as a 'reserve' so they can shift to Noumea, Canton, Pago, or wherever to react to any early raids.

The P-38s are not really usfull till the droptanks are avaible (05/42). With a SR of 4 for the E-Version, this Version is also difficult to use once they are avaible. But regardless of these problems, i always try to spare as many as i could as you only get one month of production (also 05/42 and 24x) till the F-Version is avaible.
