So does anyone know where USN ships come in from if some crazy JFB grabs the Pananma canal? Or better yet, just the Pacific end? And has anyone ever tried it? Any unforseen consequences?

I didn't think that was possible.

Japan cannot move into off map bases. I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Perhaps his question was theoretical and not about the game. They probably at least thought about it for 4.8394 seconds.

It would be interesting if some JFB were to try and camp KB around the exit hex and see what happens. But it would take a huge amount of precious fuel and you don't have a time schedule as to when a ship is going to exit Balboa.

I'm already playing a PBEM, and sir Robin has grown fangs!

No I was re-reading Hector Bywaters "Great Pacific War", which starts with a Japanese ship "kamikazing" the Panama Canal (by blowing itself up in one of the cuts). And in a "how do you screw with their minds" period of brainstorming I thought, "why blow it up? Just grab it!". In the game there is nowhere near the number of troops and fortifications that there were in real life. Drop a division of infantry, a group of combat engineers and a boat load of supplies (make that SEVERAL LARGE boatloads!) and you'll make life hell for the Americans. But since you can't do it, time to go back to the drawing board in the evil lair!

Thanks for the insight guys!

And in real life, the US heavily defended Balboa and the canal. They built up reinforced concrete bunkers, packed in land based shore batteries and rotated in troops and AA guns. Besides Gibraltar, it was one of the most heavily defended small places on Earth.

I suppose if Japan, by some crazy, banzai miracle ever destroyed or seized the Panama Canal, it would be time for the US Navy to take the long hard schlep around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America. Port Stanley would see some booming business.

I think a counter-invasion of the Zone would be in order as well.

And the exit hex for any off map location varies depending on what the destination for the exiting TF is. It is hard to cover them all.

WELL... according to FDR they should show up to our new base at Shangri-La just off the Japanese coast.

Yep, best as I can do as a JFB is set a bunch of subs at the mouth of the off map entrance and maybe get a few of them that way. I can't invade Panama though, you are safe there.

You'd have to set up a HUGE fleet base on one of the islands south of Hawaii, and jam it full of fuel and support vessels. Once you did , you'd have an incredible sub and raiding base. But you'd have to fend off LOTS of huge counter attacks. That same base would be excellent for attacks on Hawaii. It might be a gambit for force the kind of fleet action early in the war (like Yamato dreamed of with Midway). If you did it really early in the war you'd be threatening and forcing the allies to throw everything at it. As well as cut off Oz from any west coast support.

There are a lot of places on the map that would make excellent "Shangri La" bases. Unless you are a Geek that spends a lot of time studying the Map reporting systems, or a bigger geek (like me) that likes to look at every single bit of real estate, you'll never notice how many "obscure" ilands can be HUGELY built up.
