ASW?

NavS?

They do have radar for aircraft, but the unit itself has a very short range.

Status: offline 		They are basically chrome. I use them to train patrol pilots then dump the pilots into the pools.

Status: offline 		Where is Grafin Zeppelin when you need her? Not zeppelins, dirigibles. Zeppelins used highly flammable hydrogen (don't light a match around the Grafina!) while the US dirigibles used Helium. This helium came from our uranium mines as a byproduct, and at that time the US had a monopoly on helium. Do not ask me why we were mining uranium long before the war because I flat out don't know. Perhaps we were actually after another element that occurs naturally with uranium. Thorium is one, but I can't imagine what we'd want with that either.

Status: offline 		Helium is also a produced by product of some oil production. The salt drum reservoirs in Texas produced helium with the oil and gas.

BTW, the world is running out of helium. Most of the underground resources have been tapped out.

Status: offline 		USN ZPK sqns weren't dirigibles, neither. zeps/dirs had a rigid frame, ZPKs were blimps from 'Type B, limp'. just a gas-bag w/ no interior frame, 'cept for some in the tail & its control surfaces.

USN dirigibles were ZR or ZRS - Z=lighter-than-air (as oppposed to A, later V, for heavier-than-air), R=rigid, S=scouting. some of the USN dirs were named, commissioned warships (USS Shenandoah, for example), USS Akron & Macon had internal hangars for 5 scout-planes, which rtb'd by hooking on to a dangling trapeze. these 'carrier' airships had potential, but Macon was wrecked a month before a fleet-ex in March 1935 - they had plans for a night attack against Lexington!

ZF was the designation for Free balloons, ZK for Kite balloons. ZPK would be Z=LTA, P=Patrol, K=type-K airship.

i kinda like the ZPK rons for ASW, they have both radar & MAD. can i assume that their extraordinary endurance gives them an advantage when attempting to detect enemy SS? in combo w/ SC-type ASW TFs, they can help protect WC USA. the build-rate is glacial, but blimps were used on the Atlantic coast & in the Med, so there's that Europe-first strategy getting in my way again.

I think the question that is burning in the minds of all of us is: Could those ZPKs shoot down those incendiary balloons the Japanese were sending over? What would the correct patrol altitude be for interception?

Status: offline 		Blimps in real life were extremely effective ASW assets, with VERY long range. They could loiter over a target for DAYS versus hours. There is a claim that no ship escorted by a blimp was ever sunk by a u-boat. There , was , however a blimp shot down by a u-boat when it's bomb racks froze.

Status: offline 		I made a role play decision to keep all my blimps on the West Coast and keep all the blimp pilots in the squadrons, no subsitutions, in my PBEM game. I thought that using blimps as a training pool for patrol AC was TOO gamey...

Status: offline 		How many times do the Japs (player or AI) sortee a SAG or CG against the West Coast? After 3-4 hexes the pathing for convoys increase dramaticly.

Status: offline 		I like the idea of using the Zeps as ASW trainers.

For USN there is a shortage of PBYs and I like to use all my PBYs for NavS with their long legs. Most at 5k on the WC for Subs and a couple at 10k+ for NavS TF.

With the long legs of the PBYs a few PBYs placed on the WC can cover the whole coast pretty effectively.

The few restrcited DBs units are used for NavB for the DB on the fleet, therefore, there are no USN airframes left to train for the ASW once you start to get the big pile of DBs in 42.

With a USN training platform for ASW (for the DBs) that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the suggestion.

Status: offline 		Well, they are kinda cool and mostly there for the chrome, but I don't think they have much worth. Even on naval seach by the time they have spotted the enemy, the enemy has done it's damage and is on the way home. Perhaps useful for spotting subs early on but it soon becomes pretty dangerous for Japanese subs to loiter around the West Coast. Cats are scarce early on but I was able to replace them all with cats when they arrived and then just forgot about the blimps. Either way, it not going to matter much.
