Status: offline 		Slovakia has been assured of at least one gold medal since the 2000 (Sydney) games thanks to the brilliant Hochschorner twins. The brothers won gold in the last three Olympics in the Canadian Slalom Pairs. But this time around they had to settle for a bronze as Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott won gold for Great Britain and David Florence and Richard Hounslow picked up the silver.

In my opinion it was a two week sports festival, and a joy to watch. And I'm looking forward to the Paralympics as well. I have great admiration for the dedication these athletes show, years and years of training training and more training.

Status: offline 		....and Anna Watkins and Katherine Grainger in the Double Sculls. This win was especially heartwarming as Grainger had known the agony of falling just short of top spot in three games running. Finally, in her last Olympics, she got a gold to add to those 3 silvers!

Status: offline 		In many ways my favourite gold of the games was that of Alastair Brownlee in the mens triathlon. His brother Johnny, got the bronze having incurred a 15 second penalty for mounting his bike fractionally too early (although he was generous enough after to say that this did not affect the result). Alastair destroyed the field, only the Spaniard Javier Gomez was anywhere close.

A nice story in the papers recently - a pensioner has sent the two boys £10 each as a gift for their performance at the Games. Lovely!

With 16 medals to his name, Michael Phelps went into the London Games two medals behind the most decorated Olympian of all time (see post 23). He ended it with a total of 22; 18 (EIGHTEEN) of which are gold. His tally is made up of:

2004 (Athens) - 6 gold and 2 bronze
2008 (Beijing) - 8 gold
2012 (London) - 4 gold and 2 silver

He's quite good isn't he?

Status: offline 		I am not sure I agree with Women boxing on principle - but boy can they box with skill and commitment!!

The first Womens Olympic boxing champion was our very own Nicola Adams - whose smile and bubbly personality lit up the excel centre. She beat World Champion Mary Kom from India in the semi-finals (pictured) and then outclassed Ren Cancan of China in the final to take the Flyweight gold.

In the Lightweight division Liverpudlian Natasha Jonas ran into the formidable Katie Taylor of Ireland in the Quarter-Final and so had no real chance of winning a medal. However, I was really impressed with how she conducted herself before, during and after the fight - a real credit.

Status: offline 		Well I agree with womens boxing for sure, if they've got the guts they deserve the right to do it. I've been a fan of Regina Halmich for a long time, she's a german boxer with amazing fast and deadly skills.

"Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy is used to speed, but even Britain's premier cycling champion was thrilled by a ride in an RAF Typhoon.

Six-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy experienced speed of a different kind with a flight in a Royal Air Force Typhoon multi-role combat aircraft of 6 Squadron during a visit to RAF Leuchars in Fife.

The main task for 6 Squadron and RAF Leuchars is to maintain a Quick Reaction Alert Force, with crews on standby 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year to scramble and intercept unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace. During the Olympic Games, Typhoon aircraft were based at RAF Northolt in West London on standby to provide air security.

Sir Chris said:

"I am absolutely delighted to have had such a warm welcome to what is a very busy RAF station.

"Flying in the Typhoon was a really extraordinary experience and one I will never forget.""

Status: offline 		I did not notice Maaike Caelers during the London Olympics. But I sure did notice her smile when she finished second in the Stockholm triathlon today. Judging by the smile it looked like it would have been in London instead of Stockholm.
