One issue that few have discussed in regards to the first move is the importance of not routing Sovie units outside of pockets of isolation. Michael T has set the standard (yes, again) of limiting routed units to 10 or so. I've seen many top-notched German players rout 25 ++ units (particularly in AGC, south) and cringe when pundits comment on how great the first move was. The art of planning pockets and Pz moves on the first turn to "guide" routs/retreats is not discussed. Kenza's "Axis War Diary-1" is one of the few posts that has even begun to address his.

Hitman, I think I follow the train of thought, I am so new, still tring to figure out support units and air resupply. I have been attacking all along the front on the German 41 first turn. Which really seems to only rout most Soviet units. I considered the thought is it better to punch a few holes on the opening turn and isolate whole sections of the front. While sacrificing the benifits of the first turn attack by letting most of the infantry sit the first turn. But then forcing large surrenders on the second turn? But what about the lose of time and space? Does anyone have any thoughts on this subject? Is that what Kenza's Axis War Dairy-1 is about? Is there a link?

What helped me were four thigs...

1) Choose one side (either Axis or Soviet) and stay with it for the first 3-6 months to get a grasp of major principles of army organization, tactics, strategy, supply, etc. Each side is very, very different in these areas , often polar opposites.

2)Play the A1 a lot. Lenigrad scenario is a great start (of course after the Vekie luki tutorial a 1/2 dozen times.)

3)Turn to the top of the War Romm page, 4/2/12.. Collection of the best WITE posts, hit the "Added dropbox link" and you will find a gold mine. Some of it is so,so, but 70 % is great. the first 2/3-3/4 are a collection of posts about the Soviets, the remainder about the Axis. It's a must.

4) Get a mentor. I mean find old AAR's of the better players, read them and occasionally ask the author questions. Most guys (are there any women players ???) will be tickled you have read and followed their AAR's and will be happy to help you Remember stick with one side.

When you play, don't bug out without communicating with your opponent and even better, don't bug out.

In regard to the Axis, Ketxa has an AAR, "Axis war diary revisted" (7/27/12) that addresses the isolation technique. It's very insructive.

I have my favorites (Sillyflower and Belphegor are team playing against me and helplng me learn a lot about the Soviets) and you'll find yours.

It takes time to play well...how long ??? It will take more time to know/

I have a female friend in Canberra who's a reasonably avid wargamer. Empires in Arms appears to be her favourite. Not sure she's tried War in the East, however.
