Hours pass and the tension builds. What is going to happen when I watch that next combat replay? Are my carefully made plans going to work, or is something horrible going to happen? I check my email every half hour from 8 am to 2 pm. Nothing. Then, lo and behold, there's an unread message in my inbox. Yes! The wait is over!

But no. It's spam from Direct TV.

I'm new to this PBEM thing and need some non-alcohol-related ways to pass the time waiting for the next turn. Any advice from the grizzled veterans of PBEM out there?

Write a long-winded, verbose, and rambling AAR, for example: mine

Also, write spreadsheets of the Russian supply, air, and LCU situation, constantly flipping between tracker, the game, and six open spreadsheets until your computer overheats and wrist locks up.....

1. Constantly refresh the matrix forum pages as well to see if anyone has added a new post....
2. Write lots of to do lists for the game which you then forget to do
3. Start another PBEM game or three

Roger

1. Leave to run an errand. The turn will arrive 2.3 minutes after you leave. You will then realize had you not left, there is a chance you and your opponent could have flipped another turn that day, but now there's no chance. Drat!

2. Try to go to bed at a decent hour. However, your sleep will be resless as you mind refuses to give up ruminating over the map. Finally, you will doze, only to awake at a terribly early hour to check your in box.

3. Your wife calls to you coquettishly from the bedroom. Okay. That does the trick.

That is when I resend my last turn and start checking all of my games to see what I want to do.

Here's a couple of things not to do while waiting for a turn to come:

1. Do not watch Tora! Tora! Tora! Doing so will either excite or enrage you, depending upon which side you are playing, so that you do something rash when the next turn comes.

2. Do not watch the Movie that Snall not now or Ever be Mentioned here by Men or Women of Good Sense, as doing so would be bad ju ju (aka karma). Besides, if your wife catches you leering at Kate Beckinsale, she won't wax coquettish after all.

Ah Kate Beckinsale, the only redeeming item in the entire movie that shall not be mentioned.

Turn addiction syndrome seems to be a long term affliction. After 2 and a half years (real time) of game play my opponent Hkbhsi and I had finished our game the first of this month. We decided to play again but give ourselves a month of respite before the next war. Thirteen days later I have received the first turn and the addiction begins again, it's a tough nut to crack people!

This is precisely why there is so much traffic on this forum, and why the PBEM crowd is VERY WELL represented here as well.......

I had to wait four weeks for your first turn and now you complain because I am slightly late? I had to tackle a nasty nest of bald headed hornets. Those beasts have a nasty sting. And now they lack a queen. And I have a finger on my left hand that looks like a bratwurst.

try to keep your game at the correct 1 turn / day

that's about average average - unless i have a serious headache with a game (need more planning, upset with some design element, etc )

*by the way: who can guess the movie?

You're lucky. My opponent sent me a mail pretending he needs "time to figure how and where to go next". That's happened one week ago and I'm still waiting for news from him but I guess I'd better to write off this game . So what I do between turns? I figure how to kill my opponent and how to start a new PBEM (but I'd like a DaBigBabes this time!).

I often contemplate starting up a second game during the quiet times in my current one.......but I know I wouldn't be able to cope when both opponents are cranking out the turns at a decent rate. Maybe when I retire in 28 years time..........

Then I finish my post and check my mailbox...
I got a raft of reinforcements this turn and it is taking me a long time to deploy them. You should have turn 709 by the time you get back from work on Tuesday.

Exactly - turn arrives before work and of course I've got time to watch it- sure I won't be late (not). Find out on a 2 day turn half way through the replay my opponent is bombarding with a gazillion units in the Chunking seige. Half an hour later I've got to the end of the replay.

Viperpol and I have just passed 1,000 turns in our game. Two and a half years of combat. We generally do a turn a day. Except, when there is a big battle, he takes an extra day. We just had a big carrier battle near Yap in 9/44. Waiting the extra day almost killed me. Yeah, come to think of it, Ithink he is "trying" kill me.
