I wish my Mavis's would perform more like that!!

Had they been in lots of combat/training??

Actually, they had been doing search when Enterprise showed up and launched a strike on Maloelap. So the next turn I swapped them to naval attack and got these results.

better to use mavis for Nav T than for search

Service Rating 4 = soon grounded

Dinah is a pretty good search plane (SR = 2)

True, but Dinah has'nt got the legs of Mavis, and I'm not talking about old girlfriends!!

A little off topic - but playing Human V Human - is anyone else noticing that the Allies get better search with the same amount of planes ? No - not having a whinge, just wanted some comparisons. I should do a sandbox using the same plane for both sides and see ...

Dinah II is good for 1942 (14 Hex) , enough for A6M2 + Betty

Dinah III has more range, search for A6M3a + Betty/Frances

and then mavis / emily can supplement the torpedo arm

Ever tried to shoot a Mavis down in the game Pacific Fighters? Might as well be going after a B-17.

there is today (as there was in 1940) the fallacy that a 4E would be such a big target, it would be easy to shoot down

in truth, 4 engines make your AC exponentially more durable

trouble with mavis would be its slow speed, lots of passes by fighters and more time to be hit by flak

the best torpedo plane would probably be an emily with the non-self-sealing wing tanks removed,
and use the 2 or 3 tons of saved weight to add more hardpoints, more armor and guns,

and use the retractable floats and turrets -->

they got the H8K3 up to 305 mph, and that's as good as a B-24

only hard part would be making them in quantity... emily weighs about 18 tons

you might want to check the devices in some of the allied aircraft several of them have RADAR.

IIRC, they have similar durabilities in WiTP:AE. Which explains why I only lost 3 total (the FOW is on with the report) on that mission. 2 lost to fighters via OPs loss, one lost outright to flak.

Mavis is 40 something and no armor

pretty vulnerable in AE, particularly to flak (just like it's supposed to be...lots of unprotected fuel to burn)

main thing is no AF required (so you can pack your airfields with zeroes to escort them)

playing the Marianas & Downfall scenarios against the IJ AI, i'd often hear an unexplained 'ka-boom!' during a turn play. sure 'nuff, checking the subsequent ops reports, that kaboom was usually yet another of my TK/AOs falling victim to an IJ 4E patrol-bomber.

laden tankers don't survive a hit, sigh. & you've no clue to the attacker's vector - no idea where he came from. pesky devils!
