There was a question Posted regarding updating an RA Campaign if Matrix came out with a new patch/upgrade. RA is a variant based on Da Babes and DO NOT do any form of update without first hearing this is OK from Da Babes creators. You will cause all sorts of chaos if you do an update.

Just wanted to throw that out there since Von Hindenburg brought it up in another Thread.

Could we have someone from Da Babes comment on this?

What are you talking about? Why would a code patch be bad for those mods?

When the RA Team used Da Babes as a base scenario, I was told quite specifically by JWE to not use any official Matrix upgrades until he and his team had had a chance to make sure things were Ok and didn't change the coding changes making Da babes unique. If I am totally wrong here then I apologize but this is what I was told. I am a Modder and not a Programmer so have no clue beyond what I was told.

This is why I requested a Da Babes Designer to jump on this Thread to better explain it.

Just got this in the email:

One must be careful with the words. Patches come in two flavors: “Code Patches” and “Comprehensive Updates”.

Code Patches are things like Michaelm’s betas. They only contain “War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe” and perhaps “pwsdll.dll”. A Code Patch, by itself, doesn’t pose any problems to Babes or RA, and can be installed at any time.

A simple Code Patch will only overwrite the existing War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe and pwsdll.dll files.

Comprehensive Updates are official release packages from Matrix. They will have names like “WarinthePacificAdmiralsEdition-UpdateComp-v6666z.exe”. They are called comprehensive because they are, well, comprehensive. They contain:

The Official Code – WiTPAE.exe and pwsdll.dll;

The Official Map Data files – pwhexe.dat, pwzlink.dat, pwzone.dat;

The Official Map Art – all Stock WPEN.bmp and WPEH.bmp files;

The Official Ship Art – all Stock Sides and Shils;

The Official Plane Art – the Stock plane art, tops and sides;

The Official Icons, Prefs, etc – all Stock;

The Official Explosions, Fires, Clouds, Load Screens, Show Screens, etc – all Stock;

The Official Scenarios – all scenarios AND AI files, including pictures, text, etc.. in the range 001 to 025.

A Comprehensive Update will overwrite ALL of the above listed files with the Official Stock versions. If one has “replaced” a Stock file or piece of Art, it will be overwritten. For example, if one has their own BB ship art at AnSide0007.bmp, it will be replaced with the Stock AnSide0007.bmp. However, if one has “additional” art, with numbers higher than Stock (i.e., ANSide0799.bmp, for example) it won’t likely be overwritten because there is no AnSide0799 in Stock, so there’s nothing to overwrite it with.

One must backup their game environment (Map Art, Map Data, Ship/Plane/Screen/Candy Art, whatever, before installing a Comprehensive Update. After installation, replace the Stock “things” with one’s own “things”.

THAT is what I was trying to warn players about. Just don't know the jargon...

BETTER!??

Main effect for custom scenarios would be Map data and custom graphics. So would need to back up those before upgrading and then copy them back.

John 3rd, and The Babes Team -

The difference in patching should have been obvious; but was not (at least to me).

I am very appreciative of and grateful for your explanation and clarification.

Mac

John 3rd and The Babes Team -

I feel less than bright in asking, but here goes:

The early Babes release had a Babes Ship Art folder. I have double checked the Babes website, and do not see any art (other than Map Art for Andrew Brown's Extended Map).

Am I missing the Babes art download web page? If I am very much off course please forgive me. Am suddenly concerned that I missed the boat, and have my undies all in a wad... <grin>

A Chastened Mac

Is this why I'm having fits with RA?  I can get the game set aside, I patch it to the latest, I can get RA6 in Scen 70, but my extended map will not come up properly.  I was gonna post in the mod forum, but since this is here....

Lecivius -

After installing a comprehensive, official update, I reinstall the Babes and Extended Map Data and Art Zip, which over writes the patch stock files and restores the Babes map. The Babes Map Data files – pwhexe.dat, pwzlink.dat, pwzone.dat are included in the Zip.

My concern about missing any Babes Art files was unfounded.

As the Comprehensive patch only affects the Official Scenarios – all scenarios AND AI files, including pictures, text, etc.. in the range 001 to 025, the Babes Scenarios (and data) - which start at Scn 26 - are unaffected.

I think I have it right.

My appreciation to those who communicated the facts and helped me see the light.

Hope that this helps, Sir!

Mac
