I wonder if they will forcibly remove divisions that surrendered at Stalingrad if the battle never happens...
My guess is no.

Here's another preview from Rock, Paper, Shotgun:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/07/06/the-flare-path-brighton-breezy/

"The latest hexample to land in my lap is a preview build of upcoming Eastern Front heavyweight Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue. Naturally drawn to boldness and economy in wargame design, I approached the game’s dense counter-clogged battlelines with a degree of trepidation. Happily, after an hour or two of patient pocketing and stately Schwerpunkting, I have to admit I’m really rather impressed.

If Unity of Command has left you yearning for something a little grander – a less piecemeal portrait of the 1942-43 fighting at the Stalingrad end of Europe – then Case Blue could be just the ticket. While the basics are deeply traditional (48hr IGOUGO turns. Brigade-sized units. Action points…) a host of ingenious embellishments give the VR Designs design plenty of personality, depth and flavour."

Soviet-philes be warned, there are clear indications of heresy in this game.

Victor Reijkersz (Vic): I wanted to choose a theater and a time where players of a historical simulation of the military operations of both sides would be able to attain victory.

Case Blue is an “all or nothing” proposition for both sides. Breakthrough, cripple the Red Army and hold your conquests, and the Germans will probably win the whole war. For the Soviets it’s similar. They can fallback a little, but they cannot break. They must hold on to the Wolga and the Caucasus, or they will lose 80% of their oil production and thus the war.

Looks like he has foolishly attempted to create a game that is fun and the outcome is not predetermined. And yet, I am really interested in it.

A good point.

It sounds like they have made a pure fantasy game. The developers must not have a shrine to Glantz.

The conflict between the Axis and Soviet players, in this forum, has died down. It is too bad that these conflicts could not have been worked out where it should have been and that would have been in game. Ultimately, unable to take the strong positions and disagreements in game they spilled out on the forum. I think most players on both sides now realize that they essentially want the same thing; and that would be a competitive game with believable challenges.

I do feel that there are a few who have the Glantz shrine and try to state that his writings are 100% correct and then impose that perspective on the rest of us. It would have been more fair to market the game as a complete Glantz perspective of the war.

I should not be posting as my last game has wrapped up and I have moved on. As much as I want to like the game it is shelved and I guess that I did get my moneys worth.

Yes, the Decisive Campaigns games have a definite historical feel and flavour that is clearly lacking (non-existant even) in WitE. Warsaw to Paris is an underappreciated gem of a game and I am really looking forward to the Eastern Front treatment. Kudos to Victor and I hope his new release becomes the huge success it deserves.
