The O19 hit a reef. The U.S.S. Cod unsuccessfully attempts to free it. Interesting color film http://www.criticalpast.com/stock-footage-video/dutch-submarine.

Interesting.

My last turn, my opponent drove two BBs right over O-19 and she didn't manage to get a shot off! Oh well.

13 July 1945: USS Cod, with the Dutch crew on board, arrives at Subic Bay (Manilla) in the Philippines.

The O 19 crew, except the Cdt. who is staying in Manilla, is taken back to Fremantle by ship and airplane, Fremantle being both O 19's and USS Cod's home port. This return voyage was not officially organized, the crew just "hitchhiked" to their destination.

The O 19 crew is waiting for USS Cod when she arrives back in Fremantle and brings them to a party they had arranged as a "thank you" to the USS Cod for saving their lives. The party last for three days and USS Cod memorializes the event by adding a cocktail glass and the name the O 19 to her battle flag. These emblems are proudly displayed on USS Cod's bridge and battle flag today.

Looks like they are destroying the sub with gunfire. Very little information with the video. Almost useless for that reason.

When you submarine is partially airborne...you might have a small problem.

Now if subs only had wheels? Didn't the first designs of a sub way back when have wheels???

Not the very first (Alexander the Great's diving bell, Bushnell's Turtle, or the Napoleonic era designs), but some of the Simon Lake designs had wheels.

More video on YouTube

July 8, 1945 "USS Cod" arrived at Ladd Reef in the South China Sea to aid the Dutch Submarine O-19 which had grounded on the coral outcropping. After two days of attempts at pulling O-19 free, the 56 Dutch sailors were rescued to safety. Cod destroyed the O-19 with two scuttling charges, two torpedoes, and 16 rounds from 5-inch deck gun. The Cod was home to 153 men for the two and a half-day run to the recently liberated Subic Bay naval base.

funny to model that in AE..

*DD Fletcher firing 5"/Mk38 at SS O-19

if boise does that to a dutch sub on Dec 7, then DEI automatically becomes neutral and gives japan the oil it wants

In AE terms the loss of O-19 is also sad in that she can carry 20 mines, rather a lot for such a small sub.

As to wheels on subs, some of the modern midgits are rumored to have wheels. Perhaps some of the Russian, N. Korean, etc. Anybody know more?

Yes. 2X20 for a total of 40. Same goes for O-20 .

Odd they damaged their engines by running them on a reef.

I'd imagine that either they got their water intakes above waterline (in which case it would be silly trying to run the engine at all), or their propellers got stuck in the reef or buried in the sand (in which case once again it would be silly trying to run their engines).

Otherwise they should be able to run for hours at 100% power...
