Has anyone seen the latest iteration of Fighting Flattops??

This is a web based PBEM game based loosely on the old Battleline/AH Flattop system. It's been around for donkeys years but has been updated and is now built on top of the most creative use of Google Maps I have seen for a while.

It's a bit beer and pretzels as they have user scenarios from right throughout the war but they still only have one version of the Zero. However, its free and the Web interface is very intriguing. I'm surprised it hasn't been used more widely.

Overall I found it an interesting concept and well worth a look but a bit shallow so I don't think it will drag you away from here.

And worse than that- I'm now a JFB! Noooooooooooooooooooooo.

Strange, I've been challenged by someone called Itdepends who sounds vaguely familiar....

Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world......

The game welcomes you by setting up an introductory game with the person in front of and behind you so you can see how it plays (there is no AI). They only request you play a few turns to be fair to the other person.

We must be an educated lot here as things are happening in our game from hour 1 unlike the my predecessor whom I caught on the ground with no CAP!!! (Newbie!!!! )

Same here unfortunately.

Being a free site they may have bandwidth limits so we might have to finish the turn tomorrow.

Ahh well- at least it's not just me. RE being caught on the ground- took me a while to work out how to set up air groups- accidently set up a combined float fighter/search plane group before I worked out how to split them up into individual search planes.

Your challenge(s) are accepted good sirrah. The battle of Midway eh? With me as the Americans. Good thing I've read Shattered Sword- never fear- I shall not be predictable and follow the historical path- no - I think we can look forward to a good American drubbing here......unfortunately.

It appears TF placement is somewhat random- so preconceived (or even pre played) scenarios don't appear to give too much away.

Interesting game format and user interface so far. Useful. Intuitive. Minimal clicking. We'll see (?) how combat resolution goes.

I need to find a target first- apparently if your search aircraft are in the middle of a storm (lightning bolt symbol) they won't spot diddly. Also size of TF, composition and speed is supposed to influence ability to spot targets. Not sure if we'll get to grips with the combat side tonight.

anyone fancy a game of this. tocaff couldnt move his TF's but I figured that you have to click on the ship icon, drag to the location on the map where you want to go and you need to set an according speed

I've got a couple running, but I'd be willing to take on a third, cantona2.

The default carrier battle is a Coral Sea mockup, with a major caveat. The Japanese player is under no obligation to assault PM. Neosho and Sims don't exist and I'm not sure about Shoho either. But it's a 'quick and dirty' scenario to get you familiar with the mechanics.

Yes, drag and drop on the main map and then set the speed under the TF screen. You can only order TF movements and destinations during the OPS phase too. Lastly, make sure the 'display all' dots are toggled 'on' to ensure that all your TFs are displayed.

I played FF regularly back in the late 1990s.  I quit because there was a cheat that one of my opponents used (I'm sure that's long since been eliminated) and because they implemented a charge to play the game.  I checked back a time or two in the 2000s, but there was always a charge and I wasn't willing to pay.  So, is the game free again?  If so, I'm guessing its temporary to attract customers?

It's free, although you can 'upgrade' to a paid version. The free version has all sorts of banner ads for swag, but it's still useable. If you're looking for a JFB quick game, I'm your huckleberry, Reb.

Here's one of the hooks they use to get you to donate. I received this e-mail;

quote:

Hello Reg,

Your Fighting Flattops opponent known as ********* has ended your game for the scenario called Carrier Duel (game #24046).

The following reason was provided: A humbling experience.

You have achieved a high-enough VP ratio to earn a position on the Leaderboard for the Allies in this scenario, however you are not a donating player. If you later become one, then the Leaderboard will be updated to show your placement as long as eligible.

In the spirit of the Leaderboard, I won't say who the opponent was but be aware I had more than one game running if you are trying to guess.

I don't know what happened on the other side but from my side it was an absolute cluster ****. I can see now how uncoordinated strikes happen. Planes taking more time than expected to launch, groups not joining up and heading off at different times, groups going without escorts, planes running out of fuel....

But somehow...... I'll leave you with this AFB dream image!! (There were three pages of it)

I did the drag and drop method, as mentioned above, to move my TFs, but all that ever happened for me was the map scrolled.

tocaff has to be done in the Operations phase, try to zoom the map in a bit more if you need to. Willing to restart if you're up for it

I have no compunctions though on admitting I got my head handed to me by Reg- the bugger disappeared into a storm and I got a bit slack keeping track of where he was- and paid for it with my counter punch wandering around looking for the allied carriers with no flat tops to return to.

Good fun- now I just need to get some revenge against Chickenboy.
