Am I the only Tennis fan here? The British look like they have their best chance for a champion in decades! Nadal got knocked out in the 2nd round and he is in Murray's side of the draw.

Britan Andy Murray has made the Wimbledon Semi Finals the last 3 years, and lost there every year. In 2009 he lost to Roddick (who isn't what he use to be), in 2010 to Nadal and 2011 to Nadal. Murray should by all rights make his first ever Wimbledon final! England's drought could be over!!! Well at least to have a British player in the Finals. It's more likely Murray would lose to Djokovick but if Federer can somehow knock Novak out then I think Murray has an even shot against the aging Fed who hasn't looked to sharp... at least not in his last match!

Sounds promising. I used to be a tennis fanatic back in the days of Lendel, Becker, Edburgh, Agassi, Sampras, Graf, Seles et al. Haven't paid too much attention to it in years though. Good luck to the Brits.

flanyboy - Andy Murray is Scottish.... that sort of thing tends to wind our brothers north of the border right up

Oh I am well aware of that... but he would TECHNICALLY count as a British Champion and the English consider him one of their own... can't they all just share him? lol...

I would personally like to see Roddick have one last run and get his 2nd Grand Slam. I mean, the guy's made 5 finals, he just ran into Federer during his peak in 4 of them. By all rights he should have won 2009 Wimbledon but choked away a set. I just wish he could pull one in but his game has certainly degraded and he is no longer aggressive enough to beat the top players consistently, he played his best ever return game this spring in Miami when he beat Federer but I can't see him winning as much as I want to see him win Wimbledon... and yes I know he's a jerk sometimes when he plays.

There's no TECHNICALLY about it; Andy Murray is British so of course we will all be delighted if a Briton actually won at Wimbledon for the first time since the days of Fred Perry....

BUT what I am saying is that the Scottish are (rightly) very proud of their own and calling Murray an Englishman (which effectively is what you said) is guaranteed (not unreasonably) to cheese them off somewhat.

It was a typo... we American's tend to use the words British and English interchangeably, even though I am very well aware they are different and I would offend many if I were to use it around said Britons.

Understood - I just wanted to point it out so that you didn't end up in a long winded verbal exchange with some disgruntled braveheart fanatic instead you ended up in one with an Englishman...go figure?

Ah, I remember watching Virginia Wade win the 1977 Womens Wimbledon final - inthe Queens Silver Jubilee year. Now it's her Diamond Jubilee - maybe it's in the Stars for Murray to do it?

Good point AndyG1!! Yes lets hope . I remember that year very well. Everyone thought it was going to be a Sue Barker vs Chris Evert final, but Sue mucked up (the beginning of the end for her ) against Bette Stove, while Virginia performed heroics to beat Evert.

In the final it was typical British - Virginia went and lost the first set and it all looked like it was going to end in tears before she recovered to win the next two and the match

It is not that long ago since a English gentleman won Wimbledon. Peter Colt won the tournament 2004.

Edit: Therefore it would be more fair if a Swede won the tournament again. It is to long since Borg and Edberg ruled at the Wimbledon court.

God, you're a sport addict, Warspite! You never get some rest! Euro Cup + tennis + tour de France (?) + motor races + premier league + champions league etc etc etc...

I hate tennis. This sport should be banned for all I care So may the referee win!

W1 don't want to sound mean, as I know this is going to hurt.
But Tullius forgot the Euro league.

I know it was a punch under the belt. And I really do feel bad about pulling it off.

You've got the champions league and just below is the Euro League.
International european football, if you can't/ don't qualify for the champions league you get placed in the euro league.
To qualify you need to finish top of your National league. Depending on the National ranking a certain amount of teams can enter/qualify for the Champions League. England get 4 places.

Spurs finished in a good position to enter the champions league, but due to Chealsea winning the trophy and are thus allowed to defend their title next season, pushed Spurs into the Euro league.

Champions league is big money. The Euro league is a "little" less.

LOL

It's true, the Spurs fans have to be rather angry! You manage to finish the season among the 4 top teams and then Chelsea (horrible domestic league season) goes and wins the final (which I did NOT want them to win! Pure catenaccio, horrible, destructive football! )...

And oops, you are forced to play the Europa League (aka UEFA Cup). Now that's some bad luck!

Andy Murray...when he wins he says he is Scottish when he loses he says he is British.

Oh an dyes us Spurs fans are upset. Lose Harry aswell and get a Chelsea reject AVB. Lose Modric one of our best players and god knows who else this season who would have stayed if Redknapp was still there. Spurs have never done well under a foreign manager either.

Not this rubbish again

Tim is English and British
Andy is Scottish and British

There is no media conspiracy. As always, the terms are used interchangeably. Andy Murray is our most successful men's player since before WWII - let's just enjoy it shall we?

Bad luck? Rubbish. We blew a 10 (13) point lead over Arsenal (20 mins into the derby match in Feb). Then, at the end of the season, Arsenal slipped up against Norwich and handed us back the advantage. All we had to do was beat almost relegated Aston Villa. We could not even do that.....

The rules are the rules - everyone knew them - we needed 3rd to guarantee CL football. We blew it. That's not bad luck, that's Spurs being Spurs.......
