I tried to have this question addressed once upon a time, unsuccessfully. So I'll try one more time.

Why isn't it possible to choose actual pilots in a particular squadron as a leader, particularly in my carrier naval squadrons? When I open the "pick new leader" screen, I don't get a single eligible pilot in the squadron. Many of these leaders don't even show up as pilots anywhere, at least not on WitpTracker (i.e. John Waldron and Dick Best, who I think I lost back in 1942). A small handful of leaders (i.e. Max Leslie and Lance Massey of Saratoga's VB-3 and VT-3) are pilots in their respective squadrons, but I'm afraid to transfer them to anywhere else because nobody else in their squadrons can be chosen as leaders.

Anybody shed a little light on this?

As a side note, Massey's VT-3 and its Avengers are my elite torpedo squadron. Makes me wonder how well they would've done had Lance Massey lived long enough to see his TBD's swapped out for TBF's (which they would've immediately after Midway).

1. There is a database for unit leaders.

2. There is a separate database for pilots.

3. Some squadrons enter the game with a leader who is also a pilot in the squadron. That is made possible only because the individual appears in both the leader and pilot databases.

4. The game code is written so that it is not possible to move individual data from one database to another. Thus when you click on the leader, you are presented only with those individuals already named in the leader database.

Boyington is currently assigned to an Army squadron at PM. If the TV series is true he transferred to the Marines and led a fighter squadron. I tried making him commander of a Marine squadron of Texans at SD, but he did not show up on the database. I tried with Army and Navy units as well. Is he unavailable because he's assigned and not in general reserve, because he has a release date for this to happen, or just because? I suppose because of the no xfr of info from one database to another that this sort of thing is just not allowed.

There is a ldr entry for Boyington but while the pilot is linked to him, his ldr is actually a USMC ldr but the pilot is an army pilot, one of the strange things in the scenario dbs that just don't work out like you'd think the would. The AVG pilot Boyington can become a ldr through losses/promotion in that unit but get's lost if removed from command & the USMC one would be the only available.

Maybe because it is not an RPG.

I wouldn't mind if they were all called Huey, Dewey, and Louie and pilot training would be abstracted to a more manageable level.

Pilot training is, and always has been, completely optional. If you don't like to do it, then don't do it.

pilot training is a big step forward, the pilot skills are a massive step forward from WITP (well done developers)

now need to fix the interface so you can move any pilot to any squadron you want

custom airgroup size would also help a lot..so you can set up dedicated training groups

You already have the ability to move any pilot to any squadron you want, subject to national/branch restrictions.

Using the editor, you can set up as many dedicated training groups, of any size (subject to historical realities), as you please.

but I can no longer send my wounded carriers to Shanghai for repairs and have my Zero pilots fly daily ground attack missions off the flattop in the dry-dock verses helpless Chinese who are out of supply, and thus train my Zeros to be top notch dog fighters.
