Played a game using a mod. Now I switched to the default theme and tried to start a new game. Getting error message. Tried a few more times and same error. Tried to play with current theme....same error.

Unhandled exception has occurred in your application.

Thats what I have been trying to do. New theme...new game. Error message. Restart and the old theme is still active even though it switched before. Start new game with old theme...error. So, new theme or old theme gives same results.

I seem to recall getting something similar at one point when I was trying to create a new race. I wasn't really sure what I was doing so I was working through errors as they cropped up. If I recall correctly, adding a new race adds some additional files such as troop icons, race policies, characters, etc. It could be that one or more of these files might be lingering wherever they get put when you load a custom theme. When a new game attempts to load it sees these files and freaks out because it thinks it should have 26 races but shouldn't.

That's my guess, anyway.
