I mean, man, we are living in a blessed time for having all those fine naval war movies coming out just for us!

We have it all, from a complete air-naval reenactment of one of fiercest battles of all time (Cornucopia #1), to a scientific re-analysis of said battle (Cornucopia #2), all the way to a highly detailed simulation of WW2 naval combat from an, err, alternate point of view (Cornucopia #3).

What else can we ask of life other than repeatedly watching such realistic simulations?

That classic collection of the best (err, worst) naval war movies is inspired by the $12 (plus popcorn) that I spent going see:

Hey, can we add those alien jumping ships to the WITP?

Well,

Cornucopia #2 WAS released in the 80s which was known for pretty cheesy movies afterall.

Despite the appearance of Liam Neeson, the added appearance of Rhianna is enough to turn me off from watching cornucopia #3. Contemporary pop music stars annoy the brown stuff out of me. Especially ones that try acting, but have no talent, and who just happen to know the right people to over-promote their image and over-produce their music, such as it is.

Will Smith is only one of less than a handful of these converts that got it right.

Cornucopia #2 is a guilty pleasure. Don't read that as me defending it as anything redeemable other than some brain candy.

Seconded. My son and I enjoyed it. A CGI explosion-fest.
Also had bit characters who were actual retired USN who had served on USS Missouri.

Interesting discourse on these films, my first impression is that I wouldn't spend a dime or any time in viewing them. But then again I hate history by Hollywood (not that they had much to do with history!). Is any of the three really worth it?

I usually wait until they're available for streaming on Netflix or, if the movie was actually halfway decent, wait for a $1.99 BluRay or DVD rental. It's too expensive going to the theater to watch something that wasn't liked in the end.

Having said that, things are different when you take kids to see a movie. You don't want to spoil their fun, and sometimes you end up enjoying the show almost as much as they are, just because they're getting such a kick out of it!

Big films deserve to be seen on the Big Screen. We've seen Avengers TWICE at the Theatre. Plan to catch a couple of more. I heard Prometheus is excellent on the Big Screen.

The Lord of the Rings movies, Star Wars films, and other were definite MUST SEE pictures...

Cornucopia #1 is the movie that should never be mentioned on the site, never ever.

Please be aware that to print that title on this site is in bad form, and will bring you 365 bad WitP-AE turns, so there.

Now, the --REAL-- cornucopia with amazing naval movies:

In particular, Sink the Bismarck! was a movie I watched when I was 5 years old or so, on a black-and-white TV which kept turning off by itself, and I was so enthralled by the beautiful ship models that my father sat by the TV the whole movie, with his finger on the on/off button to keep the TV on. That movie made my lifelong love for warships.

Oh well, from $1.3M-budget Sink the Bismarck (even with Lutjens being portrayed as the Nazi bad guy) to $200M-budget Battleship there is a long, long distance.

I would have enjoyed the movie better if I didn't play WITP so much. Through the whole movie I kept thinking: "wow, that's at least 90% system damage there, that guy should be dead in the water! bleh, the alien admiral must be in low 30s initiative rating! whoa, that battleship's maneuver rating is at least 200, they should tone it down! this movie is broken - who put an alien fanboy to design that stuff??"

I can't even use a DVD of #1 as a decent target at the range. I keep putting the rounds through the center hole and not damaging the media that should be destroyed.

I have to admit to thoroughly enjoying #2. Brings back a memory of being a teenager in the back of a theatre, holding junior mints in my hand for 5 minutes till they got VERY soft and chucking them at anyone in the front rows.

I've never had a strong desire to see #3. Probably never will.

And I have to admit to enjoying Sink the Bismark as well. Might have something to do with my last name being Hood.

Funny as "Sink the Bismark" was the first movie I ever noted that it was a "must see"! I was real excited about it, couldn't wait BUT it NEVER came to our area and thus I didn't get to see it until about 25 years after it came out... sad but true... remember back then it was the movie houses that decided what was showing (as most were independent) and those within my reach never carried it. Those were the "good old days"?????

Or, if you are old enough to have played the original PacWar when released, way back, you may remember the mod that allowed you to include the Nimitz in the game

The best all round solution to this problem is to consign any DVD that does'nt cut the mustard to beer mat status.
It always gives me pleasure to place my VERY hot mug of coffee onto the copy of 'The Film That Cannot Be Mentioned', that my wife bought me in the erroneous belief that, because I was interested in the Pacific War, I would 'just enjoy it'.

I did point out at the time that to enjoy 'The Film That Cannot Be Mentioned', one would have to undergo a full frontal 1940's style lobotomy, replete with electric shock treatment and a sadistic 6` 10" male nurse hitting one with a rubber implement.

I then retired to the 'man cave' and watched Lee Marvin in 'Hell in the Pacific'.

Now that I looked better at the image I think I got the one from some magazine, instead the series.

Anyway, nothing beats the music of the original "Space Battleship Yamato"!

El Clipo Space Battleshipo Yamato

ps: this music should be the theme of the Movie-Who-That-Shall-Not-Say-The-Name
