SInce the first version of this game I've struggled with resources needed to build something. It is not intuitive.

Could someone please tell me in simple steps how I find out why something has stopped being built. I have a colonyship under contruction since the current game started. It is lacking two components and is sitting at 93.94% complete. How, while looking at the basa contructing, it do I find:-

a What the two components are
b What are the resources the base is lacking.

Select the colony ship, then double-click its name on the info screen on the bottom left. That'll bring up the information screen, where you select the components tab. The unfinished components are semiwhite squares, the finished look themselves. Clicking on the component should bring up its info screen, including the resource cost.
The amount of resources on the planet is checked the same way, select, double-click name, select cargo tab. Hope that helps...

Tanks for the reply, but no it doesn't. This is one screen I'm looking at but clicking on the name does nothing, there is no info screen. Although I can see a list of cargo on a planet how do I know what it's short of and how would this help in regard to the ship it's building.

If you click the components tab on the screenshot you included, what do you see there?

Also, if you open the planets menu and check the cargo for the planet that is constructing the colonizer, do you see any resources that have zero available but a number reserved?

A list of components but I can see nothing that would indicate one has not been built.

Yes, but the only ones I can see are luxary items, the last five in the pic.

Chris,

One the above screenshots showing the two colony ships, go back to that view.

Note the orange color of the first colony ship and select it. The orange color tells you that it is under-construction.

With the orange colored ship selected click on the components tab below.

There you will find the components of the ship and as you scroll thru the list you will see what components are built and what are still waiting to be built.

Take note of what has not been built and look at the resources that are needed to build that component. If you do not have that resource on the planet it must be shipped in. Check if you have any of that missing resource using the expansion planner.(top 2nd from the left). If you do then a freighter or miner will try and bring it to the base. Problems arise when creatures or pirates are in the system or the distance is making the freighter/miner run short on fuel.

If your empire does not have access to that resource you must trade for it. Send spies out if you are not sure who has that resource and try and obtain good relations asap, otherwise declare war. If you obtain mining rights or have crippled his offensive power send in a constructor to build where that resource is. The freighters will take it from there.

hope this helps.

tips.
-the farther you expand the more you must either research fuel cells or increase the fuel storage on your freighters/miners.

-at the beginning you must explore to find key resources that you have at the start but may run out of.

-do not overbuild and keep an eye on critical resources that are not in your influence.

If I could muddle out how to upload a screenshot I'd show you what I see, but at least on 1.7.0.15 there is a fairly standard yellow and black striped "under construction" icon next to the component name in the list where the component's picture would normally be. This signifies which components are still being built.

On the subject of screenshots, why is it when I click the "Click here to upload!" link in a post it doesn't seem to do anything after selecting the file on my PC and clicking OK? Yes, it's a jpeg and under the size limit. No errors are given, and further attempts tell me only 1 file may be uploaded per post.

Thanks, that's what I'm looking for.

Originally I was looking at Construction Summary in the Construction Yard screen for the info but I now realise this is the design. From the Ships and Bases screen it appears it's the Command Centre and Resorce Profile Centre that have not been built, both requiring Gold and Silicon. Going back to the Yard screen and again looking at the Construction summary I require a total of 11 Silicon and 20 Gold. From the Cargo tab I can see I have 11 Silicon but no gold on the planet. There isn't even an entry for gold in the cargo list but surely this should say Gold - Amt 0, Rsvd 20. I think it should.

During this process I could not go from the Construction Yard screen directly to the Ship screen by clicking on the name of the ship. Should I be able too as it makes no sense if you can't.

You can display the ship from the construction yard screen.

(with all ships and bases selected) simply scroll down and find the yellow name that represents the ship being built on the planet. Now either select View design which brings up the template of that type of ship or select the components tab to see what is damaged or waiting to be built.

A faster way is as follows:

on the main screen select the planet

look down to the bottom left to view the selection panel. It will show the planet with all the info and what it is building. Under the building query you will see the colony ship you are building. Remember that colony ships are not built on bases but are built on planets and do not show up in the base construction yard.

Do either of the following:

double click the orange icon representing the ship in the building query
or
single click the orange icon to display the ship. If you click in the design name you will bring up the design of the ship. Clicking anywhere else in the selection panel will bring up the construction summary of that specific ship.

As for your reserved problem.

If you have no gold in your empire and no trade route for a freighter to access that resource you cannot reserve it. Reserving in a way means that a purchase has been made and a freighter is filling the order. If it does not have the fuel or their are obstacles in the way you could be waiting a very long time.

In bold: Not from the Construction Yard screen you can't. The component tab is empty.

I have gold available. I have built other colony ships on a different planet so in the same system. The expansion planer tells me I have 17.4K gold available from 4 separate locations one of which is in the same system, actually it's on the other planet, the one I already built a colony ship on.

In view of the colony not building I've scapped it.  I'll try and build another at this planet.

Having scaped it and started a new build I now have gold in the list, none at the planet but at least I have it in the list.  Seems like a bug to me.

Watch out, gold can be there because after scrapping part of the materials and funds would be refunded.

a)

It was in your 1st screenshot??
look at the top of the construction yard screen (F10)
select from the pull down list (all ships and bases or Colony ships to be exact)

presto (your ship that is being built is now listed and is in orange). Select it and now select the components tab.

b)

I explained that you can double click.

c)

From my experience:

Before thinking it is a bug, is gold being tied up on another project, another query or are your transports tied up re-filling other orders. It is key to understand that if you build too many projects at once there will be a backlog if supplies are low. Things are not instant if you do not have the supplies at the port or planet. It could very well be a bug, who knows but next time try and stagger your builds if possible to keep your inventories stocked.

By mid game you will have more than enough freighters and bases where this will become irrelevant.

This build was the very first ship started as soon as I started the game. Gold had been moved to other planets so why not one in the same system as this is after a good length of time. If it isn't a bug then it's a game flaw.

I've never seen this - not where construction has stopped for NO reason. There has always been a reason - usually lack of a strategic resource.

Can you upload a savegame file demonstrating this? I'd be interested in taking a peek at what's actually going on.
