It's also partly because, I think, a good many of us, myself included, are somewhat perplexed by the complexity of the air system and don't feel competent trying to explain it. Personally, I let the AI do most of the work at this point and just live with it, although I hope to get better at the air war details going forward. I do not let the AI determine recon missions. I direct where I want the missions to go and let the AI select the specific planes. I don't think that there's much to be gained by taking the time to worry about exactly which planes fly which recon missions. I do adjust the air doctrine fairly frequently depending on what my priorities are at any given time. For example you don't want the computer to assign tons of close air support to an unimportant attack that you know you're going to win anyway. I say just have fun and learn the game as you go along. You can learn a lot by reading some of the many excellent AARs.
