I once had a Dinah attacking a submarine and it was then reported sunk. I had the vague suspicion that the pilot was lying tho.

No doubt he dropped a sake bottle out the window and got a critical hit. Nah, he's not lying at all.

I'm not at home so can't check but believe the armament was behind the cockpit firing upwards at a forward angle,an idea taken from the german shrage musik{spelling may be off means jazz music}cannon installation.

The Japanese developed their upward firing guns as a parallel development to Schrage Musik. They didn't know the Germans had already done it.

Yeah, I was surprised to see the upward firing arrangement in a Japanese plane. First thought was -- imported from Germany. But that they developed it independently just tops it off.

Btw, barkon, "Schräge Musik" literally means "slanted/tilted music". But "schräg" can also have the meaning "skewed, weired" in Germany. Certainly that word wasn't chosen unintentionally.

How much more important is speed, and is an armor rating of 1 versus 0 more important than a speed-disadvantage of ~60 mph? If it weren't for the really low climb rate (bummer), this plane could be a nice multipurpose frame for the recon datais.

Language changes very fast.

The translation "skewed, weird" for "schräg" is - I think - only used in that specific context for the last 1-2 decades maximum.
Back in WWII it probably only translated into "slanted/tilted music" without any secondary meaning.

I cannot back that statement up with facts though.

From what I recall, American style jazz was popular in Berlin night clubs in the 20s. The Nazis did not approve of it and called it "slanted music" (meaning deviant) and the term pretty much stuck. There was also a term coined by Chicago gangsters about "giving someone the music" when they were gunning someone down, especially with automatic weapons.

I think Schrage Musik became the term for the upward firing weapons on planes because the gun barrels were slanted, and they gave British bombers "the music". The term being associated with jazz made it a pun.
