OT My Wife is Having Surgery...

Post by KG Erwin »

...to remove her thyroid on Thursday the 24th. Wish her well, guys, and I hope she recovers quickly. Thankfully I'll have five days off to take care of her, and our daughter will be close by, too.

FYI, I've been without a thyroid since 1996. Mine was removed due to thyroid cancer. But regardless, I take a synthroid pill every day and don't really notice not having a thyroid. There was a brief period of adjustment when I felt a little off, but that also coincided with recovery from surgery. They have had to slightly adjust the dosage once in that time, but I don't really notice that I'm taking a synthetic thyroid hormone. I'm just as active as I was, well, I've slowed down some but that is just due to age. I ran two miles yesterday. I'm 58. She will be fine. My prayers for her and you, and if prayers are not your thing, consider them my best wishes.

One of my wargaming buddies had his thyroid removed a little less than a year ago and he is now cancer free and doing excellent. I'm sure you're wife will get through this just fine. All the best to you and your family.

I'm currently on meds as I have a pituitary tumour which really messed with my hormones and thyroid aswell. Anything that starts to mess with hormones or the thyroid is difficult. I'm looking forward to the day the tumour is small enough to be surgically removed as I can then start to recover. Surgery is always scary but when it boils down to it better than not having it and have a deteriorating condition. I'm sure she will be fine.

I hope all goes well for her. Be sure you shut down SPWAW games and pay extra attention to your wife.

Ditto, only mine was removed at Landstuhl Regional Med when I was deployed to Bosnia more than a decade ago.

Thyroid cancer is very survivable when caught early, but later the trick is to balance the level of thyroxin/syntheroid so as not to leach calcium from one's bones.

Think calcium supplements, fosamax, etc.
