ORIGINAL: JW FYI, I've been without a thyroid since 1996. Mine was removed due to thyroid cancer ... Ditto, only mine was removed at Landstuhl Regional Med when I was deployed to Bosnia more than a decade ago. Thyroid cancer is very survivable when caught early, but later the trick is to balance the level of thyroxin/syntheroid so as not to leach calcium from one's bones. Think calcium supplements, fosamax, etc. Yes, I take lots of calcium. I have the additional problem of having had Hodgkins Disease in the 70s and chemo, lots of radiation, etc. In fact the docs are pretty certain that is what caused my thyroid cancer, the radiation. So I take a lot of calcium and the docs encourage me to stay active and I get checked out every six months.
