Ivory Hunt: obvert(J) vs. Historiker(A)

Post by Historiker »

Closed to obvert!

After talking a lot with each other in various AARs, I decided to offer obvert to play against me, after the game against PJH didn't work. Luckily, he agreed!

The opponent:
If you know others and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know others but know yourself, you win one and lose one; if you do not know others and do not know yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.
Sun Zu

Obvert calls himself unexperienced. After reading his AARs for some time, my conclusion is:
- He has limited aggressiveness
- He is very analytical
- He neither fears self-critic, nore does he neglect cricits by others.
- He seems to have a thik skin
This means, I will have to expect no "big throws" (a german saying), but a methodical approach. I won't see him invade Alaska or Pearl Harbor, or do an allout approach for India. He will likely go for the historic acchievements, and north Australia.
After that, it depends on how much I have shaped his gameplay. If he is convinced that he can get further and sees good reason for it, he may try it. If my opposition was strong, he will halt at that line.

My game:
Erik (obvert) said several times how aggressive I am. To counter an aggressive opponent, there are only two ways:
a) best his aggressiveness and try to always throw the first and stronger punch
b) be very carefull and use the fact that every punch weakens the defense in the moment it is done.

Regarding his play, I can almost be sure that he won't go for option a. This is awesome, as it means that I avhieved an important allied goal right from the beginning: to slow the Japanese side down. No Allied player can be so aggressive that a Japanese advance can be haltetd fully, if the Japanese player plays appropriate. Force Z may be strong, but it isn't strong enough for 6 enemy BBs in one SCTF and landbased aircover from Netties.
But if you need to protect your ships from my aggressiveness, you must protect every invasion in force. This means nothing short of the fact that he'll only be able to have about two naval advances at the same time.

My reaction:
I expect him to be very carefull. This doesn't give me much czhances to hit his forces in the usual window of opportunity of the first weeks and months. BUT this will give me time!
This trade means, I won't be able to sink tons of his ships, but may reinforce vital bases to a level where I can hold them.
As his likely carefull approach will only continue as long as he fears me, I will have to throw him some bones. Consequently, I will show him some forces where it is appropriate, but he won't get the chance to sink my fleet in being if there isn't a real chance to hit him.
Without any doubt: I am the spawn of evil - and the Bavarian Beer Monster (BBM)!

Overall Strategy:
While my moves in the DEI will be of limited aggressiveness, I expect my opponent not to be a quitter. This means, I am not forced to be gentle with him of fear that the game ends in april 42. I will act accordingly and implement a strategy of flexible defense. This means, I will retreat where appropriate, but simultaniously advance where it makes sense.
To do so, I will attack usefull outposts before they are fortified and before his lines have stabilized. All I need to do is to get a clear picture of where the KB is.

Wake:
My first target will be Wake. I am starting to prepare two divisions for the invasion and will try to reinforce the Atoll before it is taken.

Palembang:
If he is as defensive as I expect, I will be able to turn Palembang into a fortress. With its refinery, it can feed a huge army without the need for any supply convoys. The only thing that is an argument against it is, that it is totally unrealistic.
How could a huge refinery feed half a million troops? Will they eat petrol and shot petrol from their rifles? Will petrol be used for spare parts in the planes on its airfields? Regarding this, "Fortress Palembang" seems a no-go! Consequently, I will refinforce it reasonably in the first turns, but am yet undecided whether I should go all in. I will prepare so, but I'm not sure, yet.
In my eyes, there's only two ways to prevent Fortress Palembang against am opponent who knows what he's doing (not saying that I am such an opponent [;)])
1. Take it before it is a fortress
2. Bomb the refinery
You don't need the refinery there, all can be converted into fuel in the Home Islands as well. If the refinery is taken out, the army there will starve. It is as simple as that. But I don't know if he is willding to do so.

As I'm still working on the turn, I might also think for two other options: I may either turn Cocos Island or Port Blair into a fortress. Both aren't that easy to be cut off, and once there are 2,5k well fortified AV on the island, it is VERY hard to be taken back.
Without any doubt: I am the spawn of evil - and the Bavarian Beer Monster (BBM)!

Celebs Sea
I sent USS Boise and USS Marblehead to hunt for CVE Taiho, which is often sailing to Tokyo without escort in many PBEMs. USS Boise had luck, as the Jap CVL launched a strike against the airfield of Cagayan and didn't have orders to fly naval strikes.
Knowing I have a warship here, he'll most likely retreat whatever worthy he has here. So the USS Boise will "visit" Palau tonight and head on to the enemy landing site at Sorong, hoping for some prey.
Marblehead will either join the Boise in Sorong or retreat towards Soerabaja.

This move will likely get me some nice new artificial reefs, while confirming obvert's impression that he's faceing an opponent so aggressive who can almost be called mad [8D]

A second day of infamy:
While one BB is sunk, the overall damage seems to be rather light. The Nevada is even seaworthy, despite 4 bomb hits. So I think it is almost certain that there will be another day of attacks. I have to counter that somehow...
Image
This is the overall situation: The Enterprise was kept in range to be able to strike in exactly this case. One would expect that any opponent sets most of his planes on port strike as primary mission. But well, obvert has read my AARs. He knows, that I put all my ships in port into a TF in the game against Hortlund. So I guess most of his forces will rather be on naval strike as primary mission.
Consequently, I will saturate his gunsights with ships, to keep the valuable ones safe:
1. Nevada runs south, together with the good CLs and CAs and a lot of destroyers.
2. One Omaha-CL sets sail to attack with two DDs.

Enterprise will strike regardless - but not the usual way:
What is a carrier? It is nothing but a moving airfield. Without its planes, it is useless, as the planes are its teeth. I want Big E's teeth in the fight, but I don't want the airfield in danger. Consequently, I sent the E's airgroups to Pearl Harbor while the E is racing south.

Where will he be?
It is rather simple, I guess. You never leave your ships where they've been on the second day, because you don't want to face surface guns without need... So he has to move them. To keep them effective, he will keep them close the PH. Granted he follows my considerationis, there can only be one possible place he'll be on day two: NE of PH. I would never sail KB through the narrow straight between Oahu and Lihue.

Turn is back to obvert. It is getting interesting, as I decided to go "all in". All warships available will sail to the projected area where the KB will be the next turn. If this doesn't work, he'll get a lot of free sinkings, including one BB...
Boise will head to the hex where the CVL is right now. She'll have the odds against her, but I guess I shouldn't wast the opportunity. Marblehead is racing to the landing in Dutch New Guinea and should be strong enough to eat some nice ships...

When I played with Panzerjaeger Hortlund, we had a dispute about how realistic a second day of attacks on Pearl Harbor is.
This is the reason, why the Japanese didn't stay for a second day of attacks on Pearl Harbor:

At first, I inteded to save all those great cruisers and the one almost undamaged BB in Pearl Harbor, but then I decided to go all in, as I felt sure to know where he'll be.
After leaving port, the ships stumble upon the numourus Jap SS in the area. While the first attack against a DD missed, the beautiful CL Helena takes one in her Belly :(

Obvert oviously has split the KB to get some SCTF cover. A smart move, because otherwise, this small SCTF propably would have already had a chance to put Topedoes into a CV...
