I enjoyed that, thanks for posting. The article said that the Nips did not build extensive ship repair facilities there. Why would they not do so? I thought Truk was their main base in the South Pacific. Maybe from lack of resources?

They did not want to invest resources onto forward bases that would probably be captured. Also, they preferred to spend on offensive measures.

Though they did have some minor facilities there, mainly to support their fleet of submarines, IIRC. In fact if you read the article listed above, you can see them referenced in the photos. There is nothing there that any major port facility wouldn't have though, naval base or not.

In other words, nothing that your standard 'pierside' repair option can't already do in game.

Japanese Naval doctrine and strategy focused on a quick war, with one large battle fought somewhere in the Pacific. They weren't planning for a long war of attrition, not because they were stupid, but because Japanese Naval Planners knew that such a long war was unwinnable.

Expending resources to build large repair facilities didn't fit with a "one battle" or quick war strategy

It also would have taken years, and would have been a) a treaty violation, and b) a clear and provocative escalation if it had happened in the 30s.

Hats off to the Navy lads who put holes in those ships filling Truk Lagoon. If anyone is into wreck diving, Truk (i.e. Chu'uk) is the mecca.

Cheers,
CC

last election (i'm one of those guys who sit behind the table at your polling-place) i noticed that a co-worker was wearing a cool pendant, so i asked, "Is that a manta ray?"

turns out it was - she had been a (civilian) master diver, & her best thing ever in that line was diving on the wrecks at Truk (but swimming alongside mantas ran a really close 2nd).

Steve took a hit from a stingray, those guys have a venomous tail-sting, but Steve died because the ray's barb pierced his heart. Mantas don't have a barbed, venomous tail - they feed on plankton & small fish & are harmless to human swimmers/divers.
