Can you guess it? I don't need a unit, if you can guess the country I would be very impressed! There are a few details in the picture that should give you a hint!

The picture was taken late 1939/early 1940

Alright, I'll take a shot:

Man looks as though he is from the British isles or of English blood. Well-groomed hair worn in the manner of the time.

The only discerning feature I can make out in the otherwise nondescript photo is the buttons. One of them appears to have a shamrock on it or a leaf with five sides. I'll take a stab and say: Irish?

Very nice try! Not quite right though.. It is not a shamrock or a leaf. It is a bit hard to make out.. it is an animal!

Looks like an elk or a moose or something of that nature?

Maybe some Canadian militia?

May I ask why this picture Cannonfodder i.e. is it personal to you? or one you have come across?

The animal looks like a Springbok to me... could this be a South African uniform?

Yeah, it is my grandfather! Nicely reverse engineered.. It is a dutch army uniform. The animal is a lion.

My grandfather served in "Fortress Kijkduin" near a large navy port in the Netherlands. He survived the war (forced labour in germany for a couple of years) and eventually died in 1999. He is 19 in this picture.

Right before getting steamrolled... There was some hard fighting going on near the "Grebbelinie" and the "Afsluitdijk" among other places, but with such a small army and no land to fallback to it was a done deal.

I have attached a colour picture of a uniform coat

And the button!

Attached a movie about the biggest dutch "ereveld" (war cemetery) in the Netherlands.

Grebbeberg

If you ever visit the Netherlands, make sure to visit one of the many war cemeteries. Americans, Commonwealth, British, Germans

thousands have died in the Netherlands and have found their last resting place there...

For a sec I thought it was Finnish uniform, since Finnish heraldic lion is very similar.
