Jeez, it was seven years ago, hard to believe. My family went with me to Gen Con in Columbus OH in 2005, and I had a great time, meeting Dave Heath and a few of the Matrix gang at the time. But, I gotta tell ya, meeting the legendary (and now-retired) designer Bill Wilder was the high point for me. We'd just walked in out of the rain, and I met another gamer who introduced me to Bill, and he said, "Bill, here's Gunny". I had my 1st Mar Div Old Breed T-shirt on, which was soaking wet, but when I met Bill, I said, "can I give you a hug?", and he said, "Sure". I wish I had a picture of that. Truth be known, many of us wargamers are soft-hearted and loving folks (but don't tell anyone that). I owe a lot to Bill, as he led me into the Matrix world and let me participate in the last Mega Campaign for SPWaW, which was "Screaming Eagles".

However, it was Bill's "Iwo Jima" scenario for SPWAW which helped lead me into my present fascination with the USMC in WWII, which has lasted until the present day. Since then I've contributed to the modern version of the USMC OOB as used in Alby's OOB mod, and that's my proudest contribution, as I believe it's the best in any tactical game in existence. I still play it sometimes.

Well sir I am glad you were "led" into Matrix. I love "Screaming Eagles". Thanks for the work you did.

Well, the current fave for me is the "Long Campaign" as the USMC, starting in August 1942. It is a vicious series of battles, from the jungles of Guadalcanal to the island assaults of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. As the Japanese switch from the banzai charges of the Solomons to the defensive entrenchments of the Marianas and the Palaus, the Marines steadily increase their firepower. By 1945 the combat intensity is incredible, with flamethrowers and explosives being used to destroy the tenacious Japanese defenders in their caves and bunkers. Heavily-armed infantry does the killing, with assistance by tank, artillery, air and naval support.

I remember that being advertised. Where is Bill anyway these days?
