I have similar problem.
Win7, i5-2500k, GTX570, 8Gb RAM system
It crashes during creation of galaxy.

Crashes when I have AUTOSAVE enabled , after the 4-6 autosave, always when it tries to save the game ...

Is this on start up or after you played a little bit. The game is running out of memory. If you are on Vista , I suggest booting into a gaming setup which uses less memory than the full windows system would.

There is a free app called vista services that you can use to shut down ... well vista services that are not needed when you are gaming.

... no have Win7 but 64bit and 16 GByte Memory

Without autosave, I could play a lot longer, but everytime when I save it is a risk ...
after I saved a game, I now always restart the game ...

... that DUMPS are too often, for a game, taht needs 3 Fullgames to beeing played !

The more happens in my universe, the more often it crashes now ... even without autosave turned on , now even more lethal , as many time my last save game ist over 1h old ... :-(

even this time, no crash dump ...

... HI there, somehow I solved the OUT OF MEMORY Crash ...

with allowing the Distant World.exe to use more than 2 GB (Hex edited the file)
AND turning autosave off and saving myself only every hour (if I don't forget)
AND starting game every 2-3 hours new

....
