Why no PBEM? It seems quite an oversight to what otherwise seems a well considered set of features.

I don't think that would be feasible given the interactive nature of the game. We're not talking a unit taking its turn before handing over to your opponent, we're talking one action - ie move a hex, fire attack etc.
PBEM in that style would be grindingly drawn out.

I agree, the game will be very boring using the PBEM, too much interaction among th players.

Did you ever play Steel Panthers with confirm op-fire on? Imagine having to send an email every time for both players.
