Iain, that is not my experience at all! Far from it in fact. To my (limited) knowledge Google play (formely Market) is by far the most used one. Atleast in Europe and most certainly in Sweden. Some Chinese Tablets have sold very poorly here for the sole reason they were incompatebly with Google play (fixed now). Most "non GP" stores I have seen simply links to GP.

A quick google revealed there are about 500.000 apps available on Google play and about 10 billion downloads in 2011. Perhaps the Euro market and US market are very different?

I'm surprised to hear there is more than one store for Android Apps - I thought they all came from the built in Market?

To be fair, digital distribution was one of the things that saved PC gaming going into the mid/late-2000s. Who knows how popular PCs would be now as a gaming platform if it wasn't for Steam/Valve.

No Android is a complete nightmare in that respect. There are many stores - I don't even know how many (every day a new hard ware manufacturer launches their own store) and each selects their own products and many have different copy protection systems so imagine the difference between Matrix, Steam and Gamers gate - that's how Android works.

I doubt the lack of android will break the hearts of most Matrix customers. And no, I don't want to play WitE on my iPhone. Of course, these newer platforms may generate a lot of cash that some of us hope will benefit the PC instead of killing it.

As a developer, I have to say that the game design drives the hardware requirements. On top of that can be added glitz, which may or may not increase the needs for computer hardware.

It use to be that main memory, disk space, and CPU speed were the primary hardware constraints on whether a game design could be implemented successfully. None of those is a major concern anymore.

Nowadays player interface components and band width needs are the elements that limit a design. Of the former, screen size is the most important, with manipulators (is there a better term? - labeling voice as a manipulator seems wrong) a close second. Band width is only relevant if there is a need to communicate with other players or if disk space isn't local to the CPU device. Oh, and adding sound is rarely a problem on any platform.

So when you compare IPads etal to PC's for their ability to host a game design, look at the screen requirements, the interface tools needed to enter commands, and the speed with which data must be retrieved/sent.

Putting monster games onto smaller platforms is usually going to fail the screen requirements. Band width would be another possible constraint. At the same time, those games are unlikely to need the more recent innovations in player interface manipulators.

I think of this as input to the game from the player (manipulators) and output from the game to the player (screen and sound). A human player can only generate so much data. Receiving and processing that input stream isn't a problem for current technology. Writing code to process it can be a lot of work, especially if there are numerous decisions being made by a player.

For example, if the player is only moving one item (e.g., his head) and his choices are a direction in 3 dimensions, then processing the input data stream is trivial. But if the player can 'hold' multiple items simultaneously, adding and subtracting from his collection, and act upon each item individually or as a group, with a range of different commands, well then, the code to support that can be a bear to write.

When programming real time simulations output to the player use to be the major constraint, but that has been mostly alleviated by the increased performance of graphics cards specifically designed for that genre. Those cards do little to help communicate to a player when a lot of information (non-3D) needs to be provided.

Maps come to mind. Tables/spreadsheets are another. Some tricks, (zooming in and out, auto-scrolling) can be used to overcome a limited amount of screen real estate. And the newer IPads always seem to have higher resolution, which definitely helps. But there are limits to what the human eye can perceive and interpret on a small screen.

I like to watch the stock market reports on TV, not so much for the content but for how they display a wealth (pun intended) of information to the viewer. I am simply dazzled by the current state of the art they exhibit in communicating data to a human. If a monster game design has data output requirements anywhere near that magnitude, then an IPad isn't going to cut it.

Or look at the news reporting that use political maps with numerous subdivisions geographically and by demographics. If a war game has different types of units which can be concentrated at different points across a map, then the developer has to do something comparable to communicate to the player where the units (a.k.a. demographics) are currently - possibly also projected over time. Again, a small screen is a major constraint on whether that game is feasible for a given platform.

So I repeat my primary point: what does the game design require? Does the platform meet those requirements? Look at the screen and get a feel for the manipulators. Perhaps an IPad will work well. Perhaps not.

Shannon well said, screen size is a major issue with regards to tablets and mobile devices especially when it comes to wargames. The greater the real estate one can see the better in a wargame. Only seeing a fraction of the map or having to zoom out so far it hurts can't be good, and I think your at a dead end if you design a game to be played on a IPad and then projected onto a TV. No one will buy it. Or if they did they would be hardcore wargamers and the game would have to be astounding.

The bigger the screen the more info you can project onto it the easier the game is to play as it cuts back on button clicking or new screen opening. I hope we all end up with 32 inch screens min and games are designed with that min screen size at some point in the future. Then we can have something like how Shannon says the News and stock market is shown, lots of info right there on the screen all the time for easy access.

I searched for some info on CCAW since not much was revealed here and it looks like some lipstick will be put on the 2007 version. We'll see what happens but I have to admit I felt like CAW kind of fell off a cliff when it came to updates from the developer. I expect that when I pay 20 or 30 dollars for a game but not 62 which was the total cost to have it sent to my home at the time.

This has happened to me more times than I'd like and has caused me to be more selective in my purchases.

It looks like that article simply took information from our existing Carriers at War product page. We haven't released any information on the new release yet.

Also, I'm not sure I follow how support fell off a cliff - it was well supported after release. The original release was updated several times, including with new features and additional content in a major update about a year after the release date. It's a solid release - it did not need more support in terms of bug-fixing that I'm aware of. Having released a solid updated game and after supporting it with several updates addressing both necessary issues and bonus features/content, SSG had to move on to work on new titles.

Regards,

- Erik

Reading the article on Carriers at War, Complete Edition, the actual text that refers to the new release is as below

"Carriers at War, Complete Edition coming Summer 2012"
"Complete Carriers at War takes this release to the next level, with many more scenarios and game improvements."
"Due for release Summer, 2012."

Everything else is describing the original product.

I am interested to in Carriers at War... for me the matrix version was and is very poor in content and game never has a comunity... if they improve the game engine (very poor the squadron system and damage system) and add more content could be a good option.

Problem with android tablets and there are many... Not all have same specs. They range from 49-499. Google play is just one store of many and oh yes you have to use a credit card for all purchases.... It's a hackers delight. The numbers listed below are not fact as many are songs not apps. Never ever had any problems with apple. Been using an iPad for years.
